Default "3W-55XI" Anyone have this puppy yet?

HI, I was looking if anyone has any experience with this new motor from 3W. They (3W) are saying 600rpm's more then other popular motors.

Thanks,
Don.

Yes.. I noticed that a few weeks ago. I used a 3W 55CS a few years ago on a biplane... had noticably more power than the DA-50 that I took off of the plane. I don't have the RPM numbers, but it definately was a better motor.

The 3W's generally have a little higher compression and produce more horsepower... but they shake like a mo fo until you get them broken in. I had the same problems with my 55, with 105 and 170 motors... but they're great after 10 gallons!

So what is the difference between the 55XI and the 55i. I notice the 55i comes in three versions, all of which are more expensive than the 55xi. It is confusing.

You'd have to call Gerhard for that detailed info. I would assume that the motor has an update carb, maybe updated porting on the cylinder head?

The Classic series is your basic run of the mill engine..... 55cc, 10:1 compression ratio.

Signature Series has increased compression to 10.5:1. Comes with a blue head and a nice chrome prop disc.

Comp. Series has even more compression, at 11:1. Comes with a Orange Metallic finish. You can order the SS/CS without the paint on the cylinders. Perfect for a SLEEPER!!!!

Also, seems like the "xi" versus the "i" is a weight difference............... To where the "xi" is lighter than the "i".......

I was worried about the weight difference when I swapped out a DA50 for the 3W 55CS in a biplane a few years ago... but I guess one company weighs the product with the igintion, the other without, the 3W muffler may be lighter, etc.. Anyway, the plane balanced as perfectly after the motor upgrade as it did before... with no added weight.

I have had a 3w 55CS for a few years....great motor. I also have the 3W150CS, DA100 and DA170.
I don't intend to incite any brand wars....all are great motors.
3W CS motors make more power, but need more care during break-in.

No argument here.. I agree on all accounts. the 3W 55CS took some extra care (baffling) to keep it cool, and it shook a little at idle until it was well broken in... but it flew a 19 pound plane like a dream. I had a 3W 170 for about 10 gallons (just getting nice) until I plowed it into a field. It had noticably more power than a DA170, but I never saw a new motor idle as smooth as the DA.

There are great features for both.

I used a pushrod with a clevis on the choke. At the other end (the side you pull) I used a another clevis but I bent it so it did the splits. This gives you a nice thing to grip when you pull or push the choke. Here it is on the 30% PAU Su-26

I did that on my P-47 but its tucked way inside the fuse and I don't have picture of that. Basically a servo tray was built so the servo sits sideways and a short link pulls/pushes the choke.

The 3W 55xi has the same bolt pattern as a DA or Dl 50. This makes it easier to swap out engines if you decide to change. I just pulled a DA 50 out of an Extreme Flight Extra 300 and I am replacing it with the 3W 55xi, so far, so good. Once I finish, I will post some photos of before and after.

As far as RPM's, I have some numbers on video from the DA, I will be using the same prop for consistancy/comparitive purposes which I will share once I get the 3W up and running.

I am not sure; but you might want to carry another prop just in case. I started with the same prop as my Da-50 and the 3W55 ripped it on the ground. I had to up size the prop and still turned great numbers. (On a 3w canister)
