Default Nelson Hobby latex paint

I gave this product a try for all the right reasons on my Carden Cuda. One of the biggest mistakes I have made in the hobby in 20 years. Let me educate you so you don't make the same mistake:

  • Doesn't match Ultracote dark yellow
  • Doesn't flow well out of a touch up gun without significant thinning
  • Doesn't cover well and it takes about 8 coats to get the job done

I could go on, but you get the idea.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I did a real nice job building the Cuda and hate to fly it with that paint job, but I guess it will fly the same.

Iron a piece of covering material on to a 4"X4"X1/8" piece of balsa and take it to a automotive paint shop. There may be other stores to do this. They will be able to match it with great results. You would be able to choose what kind of paint to use, single stage, base coat clear coat, enamel, lacque etc. to fit your budget. Gets expensive fast! I have had good luck by doing it this way. Kinda sucks because you will have to do all the prep work over.

Good luck

Yep-- Find an autobody supply house that will make you a rattle can that matches in a water based poly.. then you don't even have to clean your gun. Yellow and red usually don't cover that well... What color primer did you use?

If you don't use white under the yellow,I find it usually doesn't match correctly!

The "warbird" guys find that using blue windshield washing fluid works great as a thinner for the paint,as the alcohol evaporates.. The paint flow very nicely..

http://www.vaillyaviation.com/ this is the guy that started using Latex house paint a long time ago! There's a great how to article on his website..

Good to know - I guess I'll be crossing Nelson off the list. I need to get paint soon and I don't want to spend $100/color... How is the Radio South paint in comparison?

Thanks for your input and suggestions. I did use primer then a coat of white before applying the yellow. Hopefully my thread will save others from this hassle.

How well will an oil based paint stick to this latex? In other words, how much of the Nelson product will I have to remove before starting over? Do I have to go down to the fiberglass?

2walla idea of getting a custom latex from an auto body paint store makes some sense. I could also use a lot of vinyl graphics on the cowl to minimize visual miss-match. See below:
