Hi all -
I've been looking for an airframe to match for my 3w 275 cs and started talking to someone (who shall remane nameless for now) about building a Pitts Challenger for me. The Challenger he's proposing to build is really (really) big - 122" which is about 15" larger than BH's 50%'er ( I am already getting one of Bill's 50% Edges for my next project) . I fly at 5000 feet, so air is scarce up here. I trust the guy who's building the airframe but -am I crazy or does that Pitts seem too big for that engine? Any thoughts would be great! Chris |

All depends on the finished weight. What is it expected to weigh, all up ready to fly, less fuel?
Regards Bob

Well, I'm guessing about 60-65 lbs. all up. Seems gi-normous, but then again this engine is a sight to behold.

I have flown this plane with a ZDZ 210 and it flew well. Not unlimited but well enough to have some fun with it. a 275 is a different deal for sure..

Is this the Blazing Wings Challenger they have on thier website? I think at 5000' 65 lbs will be a small stretch for unlimited stuff. I know of Bob Williams in Utah flies at that level and he has trouble with the 275 pulling around a 50% Hempel Edge. Your altitude is killing you.

Yeah, I know, ChickenStick, the altitude bites. I tried to convince my wife to move so I could fly at a lower altitude, but she seems to think jobs and homeownership are more important than flying RC. Sometimes I just don't understand her . . . . .

I think given your altitude, the 342 would be the way to go. Now spill the beans, who is making the plane. Let us all indulge. LOL

OK, OK, it's Andreas at Blazing Wings - it's a custom build he's doing for me. He's getting the plane into ARF form for me and I'll be taking it from there. I don't do too well with little wooden pieces.
You can definitely expect a build thread when I get it. It's gonna be here the end of December I hope. C |

Hey Chris,
I am waiting for Andreas to get back this week and I will talk to him about the weight and power issues. I will also talk to him about the 342 in the Pitts. I would say that your pitt's is big, not really big. I say this because I have some plans I did last year for a 140 inch pitts. That is really big. LOL. I have your number and I will call you. Thanks, John -
Not sure I really want to spring for a 342 after just getting the 275, but what's another few thousand, right? And 120 inches IS really big - 140 inches is just ridiculous! Lol. I'm thinking Seiko servo for the rudder - thoughts on that? Power will be from 2 7000 mah 7.4 lipo's through a Powerbox 40/24. 9711's on all remaining control surfaces. Smoke? Duh! I'm already putting together parts and am so excited I can hardly think about anything else. This hobby is worse than crack! Look forward to hearing from you John! C |
