Hi all,
Starting a new project... my first giant scale anything. I will be posting photos and comments as I go through the build. As you read through, please feel free to offer any suggestions you may have. As I said it is my first so feel free to offer suggestions as I go. I guess it starts out with getting everthing together... for now I am planning to use the following: EAGLE 580 85cc~100cc 3W-110 CS 3W-L 70 tuned canister exhaust 3w 26x11 PROP spektrum 6030 servos spektrum AR7000 receiver eq-6 power expander w/ kill switch FROMECO 5200's for power FROMECO 2600 for ignition Removable Harris smoke setup (maybe) I am hoping to weigh in around 26lb. I started out weighing some things to check up on the advertised weights to see how they compare to actual. 3W-110-CS ----- ad= 6lb 5.1oz with ignition ---- actual= 6lb 10oz. 3W- Tuned Canister ---- ad= 9.9oz. ---- actual= 9.9oz. spektrum 6030 servo ---- ad= 1.8oz.(52g) ---- actual= 1.85oz.(56g) I'll need to start out with an iron to clean up the monokote, Everything else looks good. |

Nice engine. Kinda wish the engine fairy would leave one under my pillow about now since I am really gonna try and commit to the 35% project.. Always wanted a twin 3W. Gonna be a DLE 111 if the creeks don't rise again.
This is before DA and all the rest. Still want one. Always liked Caps too. Second favorite plane. From what I can tell this is the third scale Cap that is better suited for 35% powerplant.

yes, this is the new 85cc~100cc cap. You would think I could read and stick within that range. I Guess I really wanted the 3W110. That then led to the 110CS because that was all that was in stock. That then led to the 3W cans as opposed to the MTW that the plane was designed around.
Anyway, Iguess every project starts out with commitments and we try to make them work..... It should be interesting to see how it all turns out. |

I'd say you did stick in the intended range. Maxed out yes but I am sure it will be great.

Okay, I had some more time to work on things.... I went over every piece of the plane with the iron to tighten up to monokote and to get rid of some wrinkles. The covering is done.
Next I wanted to see what the exhaust chamber looked like and see what I was going to have to do to fit the bigger canisters. The 3W l-70 cans are longer than the MTW's and they have a small area with a larger diameter where they are typically held from. Removed the cover and 4 screws to open that up and it looks great in there. Everything is nicely sealed and for the purpose of weighing things, that removed 1.1oz. from the plane. In the first canister picture you can see I had to remove the silicone to get the larger part of the can through.... no worries though, you can put them back in once the can is in place. I am worried about heat though with the dark color of the wood so I elected to apply aluminum foil tape to the canister housing to help reflect the heat away from the fuselage. I weighed the tape and it comes in at 1g per 4". I just added about 0.8oz. of aluminum to the fuselage. Gee, I hope these cans are not too long. the back of the housing sits right at the wing tube housing so there is no flexability there. |

Well, its time to mount the engine measure for headers and get the exhaust done. In mounting the engine I found that the manual indicates that 5 spacer / standoffs are required. Because the plane is designed around the DA-100, I looked to see if there was a difference in the engines footprint.... there is,
The 3w engine is about 3/4" longer than the dA100. In order for the cowling to fit properly I needed to mount the engine with fewer standoffs. Anyway, the engine was mounted, cowling fit, header measured and cut (approx 6" long as opposed to the 3W reccommendation of 7 3/4". You can see in the first pictures that the headers did not fit properly and I just couldn't get them to bend so out came the hand saw. Cutting allowed me to position the header pipe exactly where i needed it. From there it was just a bit of welding and lots of sanding. I included some pics of the completed exhaust after polishing. |

Here are the pics.
With the headers being 2" shorter than recommended it will be interesting to see if there are any noticable effects. As I mentioned eariler, with the CAP there is no way to move the cans further aft. I suppose I could have used all 5 spacers on mounting the engine but I didn't want to fly a nose heavy airplane in the end because of using the larger engine (wt.) and the last thing I want to do is add weight to the total. A cut in the bottom of the cowling with a test fit and everything has clearance and looks okay too. Next I need to make some servo extensions and plan for the radio and wiring. Does anyone have any suggestions on a removable smoke setup? Anyone else building one of these that can give me an idea of any balance issues so I can plan on where to put things in the fuselage? Having fun finishing out my first giant.... any pointers are appreciated. Jon |

Can anyone explain soldering the carb linkage.... In other words, preparation, aren't there parts in close proximity that will be affected, is 2% silver bearing sufficient, what technique do you all use, etc?
Thank You |

Okay, no big deal with the soldering just used 2% silver and tilted the carb on the side to prevent flux from going down the shaft toward the carb body. All is well.
The EQ-6 is in and all of the servos are set and balanced.. First time with a power expander and found the smartfly thread to be useful in getting me started. Quite easy to setup. It seams the only real challenge now is to finish the cowl and setup the engine. I decided to split the cowling to make for easy maintenance and to make the baffling endeavor much easier. As you can imagine, spliting the cowling was easy, getting it all to fit back properly will be the real work. Below are some pics of the progress. Does anyone have any suggestions on joining and and aligning the two halves? Thank You, Jon |

Very nice job in the baffing .I think with some reinforce with fiberglass and some 1/8 ply will be fine
