I personally think soldering so many wires together would be a weak link...better to try a power explander approach assuming the board can handle 2 lipos directly(check with smartfly first). You can still use a regulator and max out the voltage(6.9v or 7v I think)....that is probably a better setup since you will get consistent voltage.
When doing fast or high load maneouvers, the servos will never get the full 8.2v of the li-ions anyway...you'll have some voltage drop from the battery. So a reg at 7v will keep things consistent, and that extra 0.3v or 0.5v you get will be inconsistent and may not be of always available advantage...particularily after a flight or two. |

Li-poly may also not be best for a gas airplane....if you really want that kind of amperage performance I'd suggest duralite Li-Mn..same li-poly weight and performance, but will never blow-up on you.
A123s are safe too, but much heavier....same power/weight as nimh/nicad... |

thanks for the reply, i really dont want to be using a power expander. the smartfly doesn't regulate the voltage to the servos anyway and i dont want to have an additional reg in between. i have been using lipos on all my planes for quite a while now, and dont have an issue with the volatility. but in terms of the soldering i really need to thing of something. alternativly i may just used mustiplex connectors where i can solder each servo to its own pin.

Smart Fly doesn't regulate the voltage to the servos.....????? What are you talking about???? What Smart-Fly product in particular are you referring to? Smart-Fly DOES have regulated products. You just have to get the right product for your application.

i guess i confused by myself here. the reason is that i acually dont want a regulator in the system. well at least between the battery and the servos. i am not planning to compete in imac unfortunatly so i dont the the consistance which the reg will bring.
just to check my options, we established that its not too safe to solder a bunch of skiny wires to a deans connector. how about if i just solder all of them to another thicker wire omitting the deasn connector all together. that sounds like a more robust solution to me. the extensions are soldered to the servo leads anyway so how is this any different... |

I thought you wanted to keep it simple? Soldering all your power wires together, extra connectors, and regulators? It all sounds way more complicated than you need it to be. Two A123 batteries into a Fromeco Wolverine switch and then two leads to the reciever. No power expanders or regulators needed. Just plug into the receiver and fly!

well simple doesn't always mean plug and play... at least for me.
and as far as my setup goes i am using HV servos, and i do want to take advantage of their s HV capabilities, there for Lipos are a must. but since i am a futaba user the receiver doesnt take HV. so these are the boundaries of my kiss setup. so far i have not spent more than 50 bucks on the entire elecronic setup (apart form servos and rx) but in any case my aim is not to bury the plane due to the cheap setup. hence the question.... |
