Well I'm up in the air now about a exhaust setup now since I crashed my last plane and it had a pitts muffler the power was good and the plane weighed 17lbs, but since I don't think I can really afford to drop $300 on pipes, and cans are the same price just not as good, how loud do you guys think a stock muffler setup on a 50cc engine is like Db's. I guess props have a considerable effect so I would be running a 23x8 mejlick to try and quiet things down but do you think it would pass a sound test at a IMAC competition, since thats what I'm starting to get into. My current field has no noise issues but I don't want it to become a problem. If anyone has taken some Db readings on a 50cc engine with different muffler setups feel free to post them, although I don't think the type of engine matters it's a DLE 55 anyways. So basically its between the stock muffler and the pitts setup and its probably going to come down to noise.

They are loud. You might want to try one of these if you're short on funds. I have two I'm about to install. Really nice for the price.

It's a straight forward canister mount. The canister measures 10.5" long by 2.375" in diameter. You normally have to cut the flex pipe and intake in the canister to get the room you need.

Is it quieter? I have a DLE 55 with a large volume Jtec and it is loud. My local filed is implementing a 94 db at 3m limit and I will need to either replace my jtec or maybe use the snuffler mufflers on the jtec.

My guess is you will be around the 98db. That is pretty standard for gas engines.

I have a nice can setup from WH that was a good deal and it is quiet on my DA50. This is my first can and my first flight I couldn't tell too much of a differance as it's been a few months since I've flown.
I put my old TBM pitts on and talk about a differance. The can really is nice and now I think all of my planes will have cans. To me, it's just a little louder than a big Saito. I'm running a carbon prop as well and that seems to help as I'm not having any ripping sounds in the air. Someday if I have a field in the middle of no where, I'd love a straight pipe and a prop that really rips.

AL have you heard this setup yet? there is a guy at my field with one on his dl50. it really isn't any quieter than the pitts he had. and definatly louder than my ks set up. leepord, if you plan on imac, welcome. it is a great activity to get into. really hones in your skills. if money is a issue, just use that pitts muffler you had and use a mejzlik 22/8 or 23/8 prop and you will be just fine. i have seen plenty of pitts muffled 50's in the contest's this year and scored fine on noise. even have da100 on stock mufflers with quiet props score just fine. the real issue is engines like 150's 170's with stock mufflers. by the way what region are you competeting in?

Sure have. This one is way better then the stock muffler for the price of a Pitts. Tell your friend to check his intake pipe to see how far past the outlet pipe it runs. There are a few different setups like this on the market and he may have one that ends at the front of the can.

i will look. it is the one that mt engine sells and looks alot like yours. but i didn't know that there is different outlet placements. but it is quieter that stock muffler, but atleast with his, it's about the same as a pitts. but a pitts still will be ok for imac and less weight to. the biggest reason i went with a ks setup is the field i fly at we are trying to stay as quiet as possible.

I've seen the MT canister, it's the one in the photo of the plane, and the Southeastrcengines one is not the same. I know for a fact that the stinger on this one is longer then the MT canister and it exits further back then the MT. Haven't run a pitts on a 50 but this one seems to keep the locals at bey with regards to sound. Take a look at where the exit pipe is mounted on the MT canister, the one in the plane, and then look at the southeastrcengine one in the photo.

Opps you got me side tracked.
What I was going to ask was is there different versions or is the one in the pic just newer? I see the point where the exhaust stack exits the can is different on your plane. |

The one on the plane is the MT. The one Ron sells is different. I'm not sure how many others are out there but I know the one Ron sells has an inlet pipe that goes back about 4" past the outlet pipe. I tried to take a picture of the inside of one but my camera wasn't up to the task. LOL Gotta love Santa's little helpers!! LOL
