Bad-ass Super Contributer!
![]() |
I'm currently building a Dalton Extra 300 (regular version) and I'm currently flying a 50cc Extreme Flight Extra 300. I like to keep a somewhat bigger glow plane to play around with and try new maneuvers with. I have a QQ 69" Yak for this purpose, but the gear plate came out of it today and I've been thinking about replacing it. I have an OS 120AX in it and it's a great motor with plenty of power. I'm thinking of getting the H9 Futana 125 when it comes out and transferring my equipment from the QQ to the H9. However, I might just do away with the glow motors and get something like the EF 78" Extra that's coming out or a 3DHS 70" slick and going with electric power. I'll get a good 8 min. of flight time which is fine for me with a practice plane.
My question is if there is some reason to stick with a glow plane instead of e-power as a practice plane? Will the difference in having a carb versus an ESC make things drastically different from doing them on my practice plane versus the bigger ones? |

I'm a big fan of e-power for the smooth performance and lack of glow-power mess and hassle. I'm also a big fan of the 70" slick.

The 78" Extreme Flight Extra would be perfect done in electric. Easy to transport, dont have to bring fuel, only batteries and a charger...doesnt get any easier.
The plane flies like a bigger airframe.....and would be perfect for practice as it does every manuever you can throw at it.

Cool. Like I said, I like electrics because you don't have to mess with mixture, fuel, etc. But I want something that has a big plane feel and I don't know if an electric motor/ESC will have a different throttle feel (other than being linear) than a glow or gas plane.
I have a few electrics right now, but they're small and so it makes for a hard comparison. |

It may be a little different but....This size electric is much more affordable now that the cost of batteries and motor/sc's have come down....

Yeah, I'm just going to go with some Zippy's. With as much as I will fly it, they should at least last a year or two before I've put them through too many charge/discharge cycles. I was also surprised to see the price of the airframe/esc/motor/motor cage combo EF has.

Well, I have 5 5945 servos and all I would need to get other than the plane, motor, esc, and batteries are some servo arms, prop, spinner, maybe an extension or two and a few other odds and ends.
I'm really leaning toward the EF Extra because my 50cc version flys so well and this would just be a slightly smaller version of it. However, the Slick is pretty cool too. |

Yep, just sent a request to be added to the list. Thanksgiving is a little earlier than I want it, but eh, it'll be worth it. I think the EF will be the best bang for the buck not that the Slick isn't a cool plane too. I just like Extras and this should be a great plane. Might have to try to get EMAC going here in TX.
Oh, and what hardware is needed other than spinner, prop, and servo arms? |
