Default Smoke on a non-smoke slimline muffler

Has anybody ever converted a non smoke tapped slimline muffler to a smoke tapped muffler? I have a DA85 with the standard slimline that comes with it and I'd like to fit the muffler for smoke if I can without having to plunk down 175+ for a new one with the smoke fitting already installed.

thanks.

I did that to my 3W mufflers. I had some supersonic mufflers that were not smoke fitted. I just looked at my Johnson mufflers that had the smoke outlets and put the smoke inlets you can buy from dubro or sullivan).

Basically you drill a small hole. Then tap it for the thread of the inlet. I used permatex Copper gasket sealant on the inlet. It works just as good as the other mufflers. If you can soder on some brass to make the inlet longer. That way the tubing won't get as hot from the muffler.

Thanks sweatpea. I was wondering where to get the inlet. I see the dubro inlet on the TBM site for 2 bucks so that is a lot better than buying a new muffler. hopefully smoking soon. BTW I like your quote. dan

I have tapped a few myself. Just get the hole as close as you can to the exhaust flange as you can.

I have had 2-stroke glow engines smoke as good as gas.

That said Don Harris smoke muffs are the best ever made.

And I don't "smoke" anymore ! It is a nice place to visit but I've decided I don't want to live there.

Now if I can decide to put down the other smokes.

I'll dig around my files and see if I can find a pic for you of what I did.

In the mean time here's a shot of my 1/3 Cub with the modified mufflers and a sullivan skywriter with super dri smoke oil on a 3W106TOC

Tap the pipe you already have. I learned a lesson spent the money on Slimline smoke muffler wtih the heater coil built in for my zenoah 62. lasted 2 flights and the gasket was burnt, what a mess. Ill be tapping it this winter..
