Default Competition Airframes 2010

A message from Rob Joyner....

Ok guys I have a big announcement to make. But first I wanted to thank all of you for the support from the beginning of Competition Airframes. As you know I have been doing a lot of building over the past two years. I have also listened to friends, customers and have watched what you guys are wanting. So I took very good notes and started earlier in the year with the design process of what I wanted to manufacture.

Three planes came to mind: 125" Extra 300 Mid Wing, 123" Extra 330 SR and a 119" Yak 55M. These planes are where I have spent the time to design and offer kits to you guys that will have a lot of attention to detail in every kit. Not only the construction, but also the contents will be what I believe to be more complete. I'm also working on a 123" Extra 260 and a 123" Edge 540 but those will be later down the road if the demand is there.

Here are a few things I'm talking about that are included:

1. Laser cut interlocking parts
2. Pipe mounts for canisters and pipes that are ready to mount. No additional work.
3. Matchbox mounting boxes that mount into the root of the wing
4. New lighter servo boxes
5. Motor box pipe cover that has all mounting holes for ignition, batteries, and throttle servo cutout with hard points. Also all the etching where things are mounted.
6. Fuel tank trays for up to 64oz tanks
7. DA 200 motor box options. Nothing to modify.
8. Radio/battery tray included.
9. Hatch has all mounting holes ready for the hatch plates. No alignment needed.
10. Printed Ins. Panel
11. Hatch screw hard points included
12. Hardware package included
13. Instruction manual with photos to correspond to the instructions.
14. Cad drawn plans

The rest of the many new items will be shown on the build thread.

These are only some of the items that are included. I will be starting a build thread for the 300 and 330SR first. I will show every detail of construction, the new CNC parts for the wheel pants, canopy, and cowling to making the molds. We will be flying the planes in Jan 2010 and tweaking them. Also I still build planes no matter of the manufacture so don't hesitate to call me.

So thanks again for the support. Competition Airframes is now a Kit Manufacturer and building company.

Thanks,

Robert Joyner

Wow! Congrats and good luck Rob. Can't wait to see some pics of what ya got for us. It never hurts to have another quality kit available and with your experience, I'm sure it'll be a winner.

I'll be watchin' for that Yak 55M. The editorial on building got me goin' the other day. I've been reading tons of build threads on Daltons and Cardens. I would love to see more plane choices for this type of build project.

Thanks
and Good Luck

Not to be Mr. Negative here .....I do appreciate what your doing but do we really need another Extra or Yak? I mean really, there's so many out there why cant manufacturers be more creative? there must be a thousand subjects to choose from. I know Extras fly well and all and all but there's no variety. This is were I applaud Pilot and RCXtreme for breaking the mold and making something different in the form of a Sbach. Just an opinion is all.

I would say yes. You are correct in that there are a ton out there, but not very many that have been well designed and actually fly as well as they should. If you compete, you're always searching for that plane that has been designed light, strong, and has little need for mixing. You see build threads all the time. Most of them are almost always modified. They get wood removed everywhere, firewalls get shortened or extended, wings get cored and reinforced with carbon tow, wing tube locations get moved. All of this work is to take a great kit and make it fly better. It's never a bad idea to take all of this into consideration and design a production kit around it.

Rob, good luck. Looking forward to all the build threads. Especially the 125" Extra 300 Mid Wing. Are they going to be coming with carbon fiber wing/stab tubes, main/tail gear, etc? Hopefully a lot of lightening mods will be incorporated in the designs.

It's nice to see a builder doing some design work this way he can incorporate his own tweaks/mods that he has acquired over the years directly into the airframe. Less time building and more time perfecting other areas.

Can't wait to see the Yak 55M

The reason you see so many Extras and Yaks is that they are great airplanes to model...everything lines up very well.

I think that the yak 54 is really overdone. The 55SP is really only available as a comp-arf, and the 55M (which I believe looks much different than the 54) isn't that common either...just the one from Krill is the only one that comes to mind.

Looking forward to some pictures!

I think the yak 55 is a great idea. The sbach is ugly.

The first prototype 300 is about finished. I really took the time to make sure every part went together with no problems. I think everyone will be surprised how all the parts go together. The pipe mounts bolt right in, the alignment is already done for you. I had two different DA motors to make sure all the mounts and holes all lined up. I'm very excited to see this plane fly.
All three planes will come with carbon wing tubes and stab tubes. Aluminum landing gear from TNT Landing Gear. Tail wheels will be up to the customer. I like the tail wheels from J&J Tail wheels. I will be stocking a few for people that want them but everyone has different taste in hardware like that. But it will be available upon request.
