Ok, Mike Morgan at DW Foamys was nice enough to hook me up with one of these sweet light kits everyone has been talking about. Well, got mine yesterday and right out of the box I new this was going to be easy to install and let me tell you, quality is TOP NOTCH!! I only got some done last night with work in all, but will try to finish it up tonight and get a night flight video soon. Here are a few pics of what is included. The kit is only 1 ounce in weight.

The kit came with two different size extensions depending on your size plane. Im installing the kit on a DW 38" Yak Ive been flying for some time now so I only needed the 480mm length. The kit also has a SWEET controller which allows you to switch between high and low light power with a simple jumper. On the label you can see the controller supports packs from 2S to 5S. The battery power is a simple connection threw your Deans connectors with a pigtail for the controller. So, no extra battery pack needed on this kit.

Ok, now for the lights. As you can see there are two LED's per light mount. One will illuminate the top of the plane and one for the bottom. DW has made some very simple connectors to connect these to your wire extensions for easy plug and play. Here is one of the first kits in flight to see the lights. Cant wait to get mine in the air.

Now, this is all I got done last night in about an hour. I wanted an easy way to take these lights off and on for day time flying. So, I grabbed some old plastic quick snap clevises I had and came up with this idea. Pretty simple, figure out where you want them, mark them, then snap them in. I had to open the holes in the mount just a tad to slide over the clevis. I put some foam safe CA in there as well since I wont be removing the clevises. I will eventually paint them black to blend in the with the wing. I used some regular fuel line to secure them on. This is very tight and I dont believe it will come off and they don't weigh anything. I cant even pull them off. When I want to take them off, simple cut the fuel line and slide them off, DONE!!!
I will have more progress tonight...... Last edited by gapple12; 02-17-2010 at 08:19 AM. |

Alright, lights are done. First I shot a little black paint on the tips, looks a little better I think. I then ran the extensions with some Velcro straps for easy removal. I put a little tape on the other end connectors just to be safe. Then it was pretty much just mounting the controller and a zip tie here and there. I plan on flying it Friday night and doing a video.

There was already a thread on them...??
![]() They're pretty much the same. Lots of videos with them on DW airframes in the other thread too ![]() Neat idea with the mounts, although they could be done lighter by using a simple piece of tape

I like the clip on idea though. Maybee clip off one of the arms, make a slot, and slide it into the foam, and glue in with a dap of foam safe CA? Here's my late Gen-X (that a dog decided to eat out of my hand), and I have a video floating around here somewhere... I'll try to get my yak goin tomorrow night- couldn't be bothered with going out tonight (already went sloping).

![]() I just really wanted to show a clean way to install them and remove them. I fly my foamy almost every weekend HARD and some times hit the ground. I dont want to have the lights on there during daylight flying. I have yet to see a detailed build thread on a light kit. These could easily be used on a small glow plane as well.
