Hello,
As a manufacturer/supporter events/sponsor of a few IMAC/Freestyle competitors. I love to see my guys win in there respective classes and have fun. However I stress with my guys that you must be good will embassadors. Yes its a business for us at events but I let the pilot flying our stuff do all the talking and the scores will reflect it. We are proud to have some Champions under our tent last year and this year. Guys have a good time at these events. The friends you make, the growth of the sport and expansion of the Flying Giants at these events brings the onsite information and fun via the interent to us. Have fun and buy more planes..... You guys all kicked hard ass, and I was simply amazed at the level of sportsmanship that all of the pilots displayed throughout the weekend with one another. I interviewed a number of judges for a project we're working on, and my top question was "how do you differentiate between the levels of bad-ass-ness that these competitors are bringing?". The answers were all the same - "it's incredibly tough". You gotta respect these guys at the end of the day - I equivelate their job with the sound/ PA guy's job (our own magilla). Tough, thankless, and all you can do is screw up. At the end of the day, they are a hard working group who's dossier's are amazing. My hats go off to them.
The FlyingGiants Crew would like to congratulate Jason Noll on his second big win of the season. Now please shave that beard off buddy. ![]() Max PS: Oh yeah, Kelly, had a blast finally having the opportunity to hang out. BTW, I still hear your dog yapping' in my head.

QQ obviously is a little behind the times with that Yak. There's no FG Vinyl on it!!!!!!!!! IF he had that, Jason Noll couldn't have won!

Hi Sports Fans,
Maybe I can shed a little light on the Judging/Scoring this year. The XFC Committee: Bill, Wendell and Frank along with the Judges Coordinator, Fred worked hard to create a fair and equitable process for selecting the winners of both the Helicopter and Airplane disciplines for this contest. The scoring is really complicated to explain so I won’t try. Just look at the results photos that have been posted here and the final results posted on XFC-RC.com and you will get a hint as to how rounds were dropped and who won which rounds. The judging criterion is very explicit and does a good job of removing subjectivity from the process. I won’t post the entire criteria here because it is 4 typewritten pages long, but here is a summary. TECHNICAL MERIT {130K } 1 Complete Use of the Flight Envelope Utilizing the Exploitation of Aerodynamic and Gyroscopic Forces 20K 2. Execution of Individual Maneuvers 50K 3. Wide variety and Versatility of Different Figures Flown on Different Axes and Flight paths 30K 4. Originality 30K ARTISTIC IMPRESSION {100 K} 5. Pleasing and Continuous Flow of Figures with Contrasting periods of Dynamic and Graceful Maneuvers 30K 6. Choreography 50K 7. Presentation of Individual and Combinations of Figures in Their Best Orientation and Optimal Position 20K OVERALL POSITIONING {20} 8. Symmetry of the Presentation Utilizing the Performance Zone to Maximize the Audience and Judges Perception, Reception, and Viewing of the Program 20K TOTAL K = 250 K Each criteria is assigned a score of 0 through 10 in 1/10 of a point increments. Hopefully you will notice that more emphasis was placed on execution and choreography than the other criteria. Someone already stated here that you have to be in total control of your aircraft 100% of the time. Each maneuver has to be performed so that the judges know that you MEANT to do it exactly they way you did it. A note about choreography is warranted as well. Flying while music is playing in the background and occasionally rolling or snapping to the beat of the music is not choreography. The aircraft needs to show the judges that it "feels" the emotion of the music that is playing. I tend to get long winded, so I will stop here. I want to offer my congratulations to all of the competitors who flew at the XFC this year. They all did a great job. Also, thanks to the XFC Committee, crew and volunteers who worked their asses off all weekend long. What a great contest. Thanks, Mark Jorgenson Judge and Scorekeeper, XFC (and a whole bunch of other contests) |

Mark, Thanks for the post. I hope that it clears up what the judges were actually looking for in the program.
Also, thanks for the work judging. I'm sure that sitting out in the hot sun, watching all the technical aspects of each and every flight, is a lot more work than most realize. The difficulty of trying to determine who was closest to the set criteria in a field as close as the excellent pilots that flew at the XFC is beyond me. Thanks for the time and comment from you and the other judges at the XFC and every other event. If it was not for fine people like yourself giving their time, there would be no competitions. Thanks again. Wiz

I would like to thank Mark Jorgenson for coming on and explaining Exactly how the scoring work, I kind of had an idea but he really cleared it all up.
I think we all have a better idea how freestyle is too be flown, and how it is judged. Thanks Mark, hope to hear more from you on this site. Chuck P.S. I also would like to thank Mark Trent for his input on the "required" sequences that were flown. |
