Default Help! I'm a video newb. Seriously, I'm clueless.

I just bought my first digital camcorder(sony DCR-TRV280) It hooks up with a usb and downloads the video into some funky sony program that only allows me to save it to my hard drive in a massive .IND file format , or burn a vcd. What are my options? The first person to say "get a better camera" gets slapped.

Use windows movie maker, easiest thing to do. You can open the program, then pull the video from the camera. Skip the sony program all together.

Ok. I got movie maker running now. I set the capture to the highest quality setting and saved it as a large file and it is all pixelated. Is my computer too slow to capture the video? Or is this camera a POS?

Geez guys! Come on, the TRV-280 is a great camera. Cheap, you can throw it in your field box and thrash it, and it has pretty darn good image quality. I have one, and use it as my secondary camera.

Keith, take that sony disk and use it as a coaster. You need to use movie maker. Also, MAKE SURE you are using a FIREWIRE cable, not a USB cable. There are 3 places you can plug in a cable on the front right of the camera. You want the hole directly below the yellow one.. it's marked A/V.

Once you connect it, you're ready to go. Go into movie maker, file, capture video. Capture at DV quality. After you edit it, file, save movie file.

Keep web vids around 4 minutes long. When you save the movie file, a 50megabyte file has pretty good quality.

I'm running 128meg video card. You nailed it on the head Max. I have it hooked up usb and my comp is running usb 1.0 which is probably like trying to drain a pool with a straw. I ditched the sony crapware. I'm going to look into installing a firewire port. Are they usually on the video card or can I get pci firewire card? I'm glad it's not the camera as I don't want to shell out for better model as I'm saving for a Synergy N9. I like this one, fits perfect in my transmitter case, and is dumbtarded easy to use.

What about a hardware video capture device and video editing package? Anyone suggest good ones they use? My friend's cam has a USB port also. I already know about the firewire thing. I need a decent video editing package to make some movies with music and such.

I've been messing with windoz movie maker. It's pretty easy to capture, edit and render.

Sweet!! I take it you like AFI? When I first saw them was with The Dropkick Murphys and Lars from Rancid. They were alright...reminded me of a younger Misfits.

Gona capture some video tonight hoepfully.
