Launching a billion dollar rocket into space isn't something to take chances with. Flying near thunderstorms is bad enough in regular airplanes.

Hee hee. I was at space camp a couple weeks ago and couldn't help being the first person to do a barrel roll while coming in for landing on one of Nasa's multi-million dollar shuttle simulators that astronauts use to train!

Yeah, thunderstorms will ruin your day... Look at Scott Crossfield. He was the first to go Mach 2 and did countless other things. After surviving all of that, a thunderstorm got him while he was flying home a few months ago.

i bet it's pretty expensive to keep that thing in a state of readiness waiting for a launch window.

Yes, it is our tax dollars at work, and I am very happy with our space program. Do you enjoy using your cell phone? I bet you do, and you can thank our space program for the luxuary, and many other things that we just take for granted. And one other thing. I don't care if the shuttle has to sit on the pad for an entire year waiting for a good launch window, if it's means we saved a life.

Yep. I also enjoy knowing that around 600 million dollars vaporize every time they launch that thing. I think a space program is a good thing, but there are more cost effective ways of accomplishing the same thing. It's a model of government efficiency
