What was the total weight on your builders kit plane? I just picked up a CA Extra 300L 34% for $400 i had to jump all over that! I was thinking about a Super zdz 80 for power.

I'm getting ready to start on mine also. It's the 34% kit. What size SWB bellcrank are you using on the rudder system? I measured the bottom of the fuse where the wires will exit and it looks like a 3 and 1/8" will work. Also, how are your elevator servos set up? In the fuse, or in the stabs? Please show some photos of your setups. Thanks.

Here are some pics. I don't remember what size the arms are...

Servos are 8611 all around, DA-100, Misc. TBM supplies (Batteries, etc.) MSC prop (which is aweful...I have a Mej replacement.)

Good luck!

Thanks for the photos. It looks like your elevator servos are just forward of the stab tube. I'd like to try one of those SWB rudder horns also. Are you also using the SWB tiller arm? Have you flown that thing yet??? I remember when you picked it up.

Yes, It flys quite nicely, thanks.

Most of the flying was ultra-windy IMAC...seems to fly very nicely. Light wingloading makes approaches and calm-day aerobatics easier. It does get blown around in big wind conditions. I'd rather have a lighter plane and suffer through blustery days than fly a brick which never feels "right".

Flew Vegas IMAC earlier in the year...aweful winds...rough going for all...treacherous crosswind landings...the plane made me very confident in my (admittedly) limited abilities. People around me were having higher-level pilots land thair planes for them because of the crosswind conditions. I was confident enough to land my own plane in what most people would think were unflyable conditions. My plane escaped damage while several others went home in bags and boxes.

I can't get new pics of the SWB arms, etc. 'til tomorrow (at the earliest) so we'll have to wait on that.

Anyone else wanna chime in???

The tiller arm and rudder horn are SWB 4 inch. It is too wide, as it will touch the (down) elevator in "3D" mode. I bought this plane for IMAC only, so I don't care about whether or not the throws are capable of 3D rates. I use 45 degree up elevator as a brake after landing, but that's the only "extreme" control surface setting. Anyway, you might want to double check the clearances before you hinge and cover your bird.

You might fnd that the suggested CG is too far forward.

Keep us posted.

Robert

Thanks for the photos. They are great. Do you think that a 3.5" would work better? It looks like you have plenty of clearance on the fuse side. I just ordered the 4D gear from Graphtech for mine. I'm going to be ordering the rest of the equipment a little at a time. I'm planning on using the SWB equipment and a Pete's tailwheel assembly. The engine will most likely be a BME 105 on stock mufflers. 5955 servos also.

I am not an expert, but since you asked:

I don't see why a 3.5 inch arm would not work just fine;
4D Gear sounds like a great upgrade as my gear is "saggy" -- the wheels are not square to the ground under the weight of the plane...one thing about CF gear is that they are not forgiving of bad landings...they seem more prone to chatter in crosswing conditions and seem less "compliant" than aluminum so you might be more likely to rip-out your LG plate in the fuse...not anything to worry about...just something to keep in mind on blustery days when the plane is still new to you;
SWB is a good choice, since it is reliable and common;
Tailwheel...my next tailwheel will be from Mr Berkheimer at RCBlimp Productions.
BME 105...I have no 1st hand experience so I won't comment...but my DA experiences have been absolutely top notch and would not own anything else;
stock muffs...me too, but cans sure sound sweet;
Hitec 5955s...people are happy with them...I was less-than-impressed with some of the slightly lower-level Hitec servos (centering woes) so I am avoiding Hitec servos completely, but have been very happy with the 8611 and 8611A servos I'm running now. For now I'm sticking with JR.

Good luck with your project!

Guys,
CA Models sell the correct horns for this model, on my 34% I am using an SWB tray with a 3.5 inch bellcrank and a CA Model rudder horn and everything works fine, mine come out slightly nose heavy with a 3W 106CS on cannisters but only 26.5lbs auw.

I've also got the CA-Model horns and was wondering how the setup with them will work. I found that the hinge point of the horn will not line up with the hinge line of the surface.

Does thins make a difference?

Hobbyman,
can you post a photo of that CA horn?

I looked at that Carbon Pro V2.0 and it looks way nice. I may have to try that one.
