ROFL.........too funny. That plane has been "passed" around more than a few times. Kinda like the town bike.....everyone gets to take a ride.

Dennis,
Not sure why you're not finding anyone with experience with the new AW Edges.....so I'll throw my $.02 in here. I have not built one of the "new AW Edge's but I do remember seeing a build thread on RCU not too long ago. I have however built one of the original kits and basically rebuilt the Edge Huckeneer has now....so I know the airframe fairly well. The new kits are basically CA Models kits....and while most of what I've seen has been positive, I've read of some complaints about poor wood quality and warped parts. Neither of these complaints would bother me too much considering the kits are cut in a pretty humid environment then shipped up here....some warping should be expected. The pre-sheeted foam sounds like a nice time-saver, but there's still plenty of work to be done. You need to cut out all control surfaces, glue on the hinge material, bevel, hinge, cut servo bays (i believe). If you're primarily looking at this kit because it comes pre-sheeted and not because you really want an AW Edge.....then IMO, you can find as nice or nicer flying planes from other mfg's. This is just me, but I'd have a hard time trusting foam-core wings that I didn't skin myself. Sheeting foam isn't hard to do at all and doesn't take all that much time to do. Anyway, on to what I do know about the AW Edge. The original kits were very easy to build and the new kits follow the same basic design....just with new laser cut parts. It's just a flat ply sided fuse with formers and stringers giving it it's basic shape. Glue on the foam pieces and it turns into an airplane. The 2 kit-built Edges I had were both in the 26lb range and I believe this is typical of kit-built AW Edges. I've heard the ARF versions were somewhat heavier. At 26-27lbs, the Edge is awesome in the air. A great 3D machine...perfect for throwing around and getting crazy. I prefer to fly a little more "precision" than 3D and that's why I ultimately got rid of both of them. I really don't think you'd be disappointed with the finished airframe if you decide to build one. Hope this helps a little bit. |
