Default Extra 260 90 ARF by Seagull & DLE 20cc

Hello everyone -

Currently I have a Extra 260 arf by Seagull with a Cermark MLD-28 engine in it.
I am looking to remove the Cermark MLD-28 and replace it with a DLE-20cc.

Anyone out in RC-land have any opinions, advice and or
who has flown this plane or used the DLE 20 and their experiences.

If you are interested as to why I am looking to remove the MLD-28 read my story below.

Thanks

Remo

My Story:
This plane flew pretty good during the 10-12 times I was able to get this plane in the air. About the 8th time of turning this engine on, it became more difficult to start. It went from 4 to 10 and more manual hand spins. I called Cermark and they ask me to send the engine in. They had it for a week and sent it back. Cermark told me that they had replaced a bad pick up sensor. I installed the engine back on the plane and started the engine with no problem. After about 3 minutes the engine died. I try starting the engine again and was having the same issue as before except this time the engine did not start at all. I called Cermark who then told me that they had a bad batch of pick up sensors and they would send me a new one for me to install myself. That was back in November. I have called and left messages with no return calls back.

When you installed the Gas engine in this plane, did you put in any right thrust? I am just starting to build one of these, and will be installing a DLE 20 inverted.

Gday Remo,

Is this the blue and white schemed extra? or the larger red and white one?

I purchased the blue one and was tossing up between the DLE 20 or 30 myself.

I used to have one 5 years ago with a OS90FX and it was a VERY underpowered for 3D but ok for sport flying. A very stable plane, takes the hard landing well.. lol

Im trying to convert my wife from glo to gassers and thought that this would be a good plane for her before I move her into 50 - 100ccers.. (give me an excuse to up grade then as she gets my old planes)

Ill follow your thread with interest!

cheers

I have the engine mounted DLE20 - added a little right thrust, surfaces mounted and getting tail feathers ready to glue in. Still need to order some servos etc. Seems to be pretty well built. Covering took a little work to get the rinkles out etc. Should not take too much longer after I get the rest of the parts.

Hello Tackdog

Nice to meet you - It is the Blue and white one. Sounds like you and your wife share the same hobby, good for you.

The Cermark 28 cc I had on there was a little bit too much power for that plane. I never flew it past 60% throttle.
I think I can get away with the 20cc on there too.

keep in touch

Hello Bruce -

Is it possible if you can post picture of the engine and plane ?
I looked at the specks of the DLE 20 and from my calculations, it looked like
the distance from the firewall to the prop over extended the from of the cowl.
Is that true ? or are my calculations off.
I put JR DS821 servos all around on my 260 plane with no issues.
It is a good structure plane. I can never get those crinkles 100% out of any plane I've had.

Thanks

Hey Remo
I have the 60 size version that I put the DLE20 in. It flies great and does have unlimited vertical. Mine weighs in about 8 to 8.5 lbs. I think the 20 in your 90 sized plane might be underpowered. You might want to think about the DLE30. Just my 2 cents....

What is the weight of your plane? A DLE-20 with a Vess 17x6 puts out around 14lb. of static thrust and a DLE-30 with a 19A puts out about 18-19lb thrust. Depends on how you fly and how crazy you want to get.

Will take some photos in the near future. Had no problem in getting the engine mounted - used the stock mounts, but moved the holes. Put the prop washer at 140 mm from the firewall.

What size spinner are you using? I am thinking of going with a 3". Do you think this will fit? 2 3/4 seem to have too small a cutout for a 17 x 6 prop

Hello Charlie -
I am going to take your 2 cents into consideration. The one thing that is holding me back on installing the DLE 30 is the dimensions. Right now on the 260 I have 5 1/4 " from the firewall to the front of the cowl. The dimension on the DLE 30 is 6.37 " from the back of the stand offs to the prop. check the manual at this web site. http://www.dle-engines.com/dleg0031.html page 22.

Any one have any ideas ?

Thanks

I am putting the 30 on a 70in EF extra and I have got to cut a hole in the firewall for the carb and make shorter standoffs. I am sure you could do the same on this plane.

Hello Bruce -

I am using a 2 3/4 spinner. I do not have any wiggle room with a wooden 16x8 airman prop. I don't know the 17x6 prop, you might want to go with a 3" spinner because on mine its a tight fit.
