Default Sunscreen Burn!

I really curious what sunscreen you guys are using.

Since I'm follicly challenged I have to apply sunscreen to my bald spot (caused from years of energetic headboard friction BTW ) as it does get red from a day at the field.

Now I wear a straw hat (similar to the one in the avatar) that has a SPF liner of 15 around the brim and in the dome. It was 94o today (felt like 115o!!) and well invariably either sweat will make it into my eyes a bit or my eyes will itch and water after I rub them. I've noticed my eyes will start to burn the most WHEN I HAVE MY DAMN PLANE IN THE AIR and my face is into the wind!

I tried wearing a sweat band and found that arrangement doesn't work so well. I even bought an oversized hat size and placed a sweat band in the rim - again tho- if I touch my eyes anytime during the day, I stand a good chance of watery eyes on landing approach.
Yes, I do usually wash my hands after application - but touching a sweaty arm or neck or other treated part can cause a transfer of the 'irritant' to the eyes.

I thinking the best option will be finding a child's sunscreen like those child's shampoos formulated to not hurt the eyes.
Stuff I used today - Banana Boat KIDS SPF 50 - though it smelled of bubble gum - performed pretty good - but I still had a slight tearing on one of my flights.

What are you using and have you had a similar experience?

Mercury,

I spend my days mowing yards. I use Bullfrog spray on my thinning nogin. It is SPF 35 and works well. It is Water and sweat proof. It has been close to 100 most days here and no burn yet.

You need to not put any sunscreen above your eyes and then wear a full-brimmed hat. It's the only solution.

Garrett,
I use the NO-AD spf 45 also. VERY good. I forgot about it. Just about as thick as jam.

Thanks for the suggestions all.
Gee maybe I'm gitt'n sensitive in my older (?) years? Great!
Bullfrog (not the spray) & NO AD both have had me in tears before. Guess ya better enjoy your time of tolerance guys! I'll look for and try the BF spray.

Hard to believe I am alone on this burning and watering eyes problem?
Not wearing sunscreen seems to be the only solution because i will invariably wipe my eyes with my wrist, hand or finger eventually.

So the problem is the residue on your hands irritating your eyes? Simple, carry a little hand towel or something like that

I should wear sun block... but the slimey feeling or the dried feeling from the spray on is just gross feeling especially when sand gets on you. Now you are hot, sweaty, slimey and grimey! I am getting used to the dry spray on type though... I cant keep this up or I will be leather by 50.

Even a towel can transfer the sunscreen to your eyes. Disposable towels are an idea tho.
Hey, if this was easy, believe I wouldn't have brought the issue up.

Sunscreen really sucks but the alternative is having a dermatologist dig hoes in your body. Sometimes deep ones! That sucks harder!! Hasn't happened to me yet - but a few people I know have endured the procedure.

Cannot deny the cause/effect of UV.

I use water babies 50 spf. Comes in a pump spray bottle. Make sure you let the stuff dry and soak in before you start to sweat. Helps reduce the "wipe transfer"

Great loan4utoo! Looks like a personal referral I'm ready to give a try.

This product will be "in the bag" too:Neutrogena UVA/UVB Sunblock Lotion (*est. $7.50/4 ounces)
Updated May 2006

I found this interesting info:
Reviews say that sunscreen ingredients are just starting to catch up with the discovery of how bad UVA rays are, and unless the product contains avobenzone (also called Parsol 1789), titanium dioxide, or zinc oxide, (or Mexoryl SX or Tinosorb outside the U.S.), you're not protected from UVA. There are two different types of UV rays in sunlight: UVB light causes surface sunburn, while UVA light penetrates and causes deeper connective tissue damage -- even when the skin surface feels cool. UVA light is the culprit for premature aging and cellular damage. With the number of sunscreens on the market, it's important to know which ones will protect you from both UVB and UVA rays.

The SPF (sunscreen protection factor) in sunscreen is frequently misunderstood; many people think that an SPF 30 offers double the protection of an SPF 15. However, reviewers say SPF 15 blocks 93% of rays, while SPF 30 blocks 97%, only 4% more. SPF ratings higher than 30 don't offer any further UV protection, and let the same 3% of UV rays through as SPF 30. Further, SPF only blocks UVB rays. For that reason, it's just as important to look specifically for UVA protection.

Sunscreen reviews also point out that most children's sunscreens are no different than those for adults, except for added fragrance that can actually irritate kids' more-sensitive skin. The only beneficial difference to look for is UVA protection with titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, since these are less irritating than avobenzone to children's skin.
n identifying the most effective sunscreens, the book, "Don't Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me," by Paula Begoun, rates sunscreens according to how well they protect from UVA and UVB, as well as on water resistance, fragrance and feel. We found that this book had the most thorough, credible information on which sunscreens are best. Consumer Reports has an excellent review where testing is more scientific, but that report is five years old and of limited use. A more recent review from Slate magazine covers some sunscreen sprays, along with lotions, though tests are informal.

For those whom haven't got enough of this type of info:
