Lost a finger, trying to start a gas engine..

Hi all,

I just heard someone was trying to start a 200cc engine & the engine back fired & he lost his middle finger tip, this sounds scary. Have you also came across similar accidents?

I have seen some nasty stuff, mostly from Glow engines and I can't imagine something like a 23 x 8 or 28 x 10 catching a hand!

Got a good buddy of mine who is a member here that lost TWO fingers on his left hand from a DA85 and a Mezjlic prop.......one of the fingers they never found.

These things are dangerous folks! I see people starting these things with no protection and just shake my head in amazement.

While I prefer to hand start my gas engines with a heavy leather glove, the largest engines I own, or intend to own are 30cc and smaller. A 200cc engine is a serious beast. For hand starting, choice of a suitable glove would be critical

WOW!
Looks like the "Duck and Cover" technique definitely didn't work for him! Hope he's ok.

man o man that had to hurt.

Dare I say/surmise that this probably was a runaway situation, ie the plane got away from someone and came crashing down...

Assuming all communications between receiver and transmitter were NOT lost, this is a great reason to always use a remote Opto kill system.

any details on the situation that occured with that unfortunate fella?

I start my engines sorta back handed.. with my left hand... seems like a more natural way.... more natural followthrough.... (I fly mode one.. so my right thumb is on the throttle stick)

Re: Lost a finger, trying to start a gas engine..

We had a bad one two years ago a guy was sitting in front of his Saito 150 powered Sig Four Star and reached around the turning prop to make a needle adjustment (at full throttle no less). Then, forgot about the prop and brought his hand straight back. I forget how many staples and stitches that was, but LOTS. That is the only bad injury I have seen in person.

This is one of the reasons I got out of glow planes (besides going bigger). Slimy hands, turning needles, reaching in the remove glow ignitors, all that stuff.....However, I still have never used a glove when starting my gas engines. I've only seen one or two people actually use a glove for that matter.

About lost two fingertips to an OS 1.08. Had stitches through the nail beds. Pretty sure I broke my little finger from a DA-85 as well. All starting done with a kevlar glove now.
