30% Avaition Model Yak 54 DA 50

I have this Avaition model Yak. I have Fromeco Batteries a 4800 of the flight pack, and 2400 on the ignition. I have a DA 50 engine with a pitts muffler. The plane wieghs 17 lbs .11 oz I have tried a PT Carbon prop 23x8 and a PT Carbon 22x8 and it just doesnt seem to have Authority to pull out of a hover. Dont get me wrong it will accellerate out of a hover and continune to gain speed upwards but it is slow to pull out of a hover. I guess my question would be what can i do to get more pull out power? I have been told to put a tuned pipe on it and it will give me about 300 more RPM's. What is everyones thoughts? Thanks for all your help. Marlin

You can add a pipe, but it will add even more weight. Do you have a pitts muffler or the one that DA sells with a single stack?" I am pretty sure the one DA sells is lighter and gives you a bit more power than the pitts wraparound muffler. Have you tried things to lighten it like carbon gear and wing tube, light tires, spinner, etc? You could probably even save another 3oz by going to a 2400 rx battery and still have 7-8 flights on a charge.

I have the same plane, only a few flights on it but mine comes in at about 18 or so. No lightening efforts made, DA50, Menz 22X8, and stock exhaust. It pulls out pretty good IMO. I would really look at getting a stock muffler, if you don't have a noise problem at your field. I noticed a huge difference when I switched from the BCM pitts to the stock DA. I can't give you exact numbers as I was running two different 22X8 props but I gained 400+ RPM's.

Chris does the stock DA muffler have one or two pipes for the exhaust? I do have two pipes for the exhaust. Marlin

Thanks i will get a stock DA muffler. Troy built models There are two guys that work there, Bill and Gene. Gene has told me that the PT Carbon Fiber 22x8 and 23x8 eight wiegh and are the exactly the same as a wood prop is. What do you guys think? Wood or Carbon for 3d. They are telling me that the PT props spool up as fast as the wood ones do. Marlin

I like the PT models as well or better than wood props. They are a lot lighter than a mejzlik, spool as fast as wood, but do not flex like wood, awesome props. However, the best prop I tried on my 50 was a Prince P-Tip, but they are very expensive. If your yak is heavy, stick with the 22x8 and let the motor rev up.

Is 17lbs 11ozs heavy what did you notice better about the prince -p prop?

17lbs 11oz is a little porky, awesome performance needs to be around 16-16.5lbs. You could use the stock DA muffler and drop 5-6 ounces, go to a 2400 rx pack and drop another 3oz, carbon wingtube drop 4-6oz, and it starts to add up pretty quick. The P-tips just pull like a tractor, low speed pulling power like nothing else, but that comes at a price.

Where do you get the p tips prop from. what size prop and what size are you running? Marlin

you have to get the P-tips from either www.q13hobbies.com or www.princeaircraft.com and I used the 22x8.

Just a thought before you dump a ton of money into a P tip, although if you have the $$ go for it, why not wait and try the stock exhaust and the props you have now? Might be what your looking for without all that extra money.

Chris you are right i am going to do what you guys said and get a da 50 stock muffler and try it. Thanks for all the help on here. I like to get more pull out power out of a hover. I can see a 40% on the horizon. Marlin

Mine with the 22x8 P-Tip was great. 18 pounds isnt bad for that airframe, it will still float like a feather-it just wont rocket out of a hover, but then again, im not sure what is with peoples obsession to blast out of a hover, there is just no need. How much fuel do you have through your 50? Is is completely broken in? For props, stick with either a Menz 22x8 or the P-Tip is you can track one down. With a broken in motor, and the right prop, im sure you will have plenty of pull out.

John, i have 6 gallons of lawn boy ashless oil and just switched over to amsoil 100-1 i am running a 22x8 PT prop. I am getting 7200 RPM on that prop.
