Default Custom full fuse foamie python????

Here are pics of the CAD model so far. The updates will probably be few and far between as I am also working on another project and I have to experiment with forming the foam as well, I have never worked with fiberglass (for the cowl), and I have know idea how I am going to make the canopy (I also have things like a job as I don't work in the modeling business).

Depending on the wingspan and therefore size of the canopy you could carve up a balsa block for the canopy, stuff it inside a PET soda bottle with more blocks to build it up so that it is pressing against the plastic and hit it with a heat gun. The soda bottle will shrink around the plug.

Thanks for all the encouragement and tips. Here is a pic of the 2-d drawing that will be printed out for the pattern when cutting the foam. As you can see there are no lines for the control surfaces or holes in the supports for keeping it light as I will design that stuff into it as I build.

Is there a specific type of wood that should be used or does regular balsa work? Balsa would be easiest to shape.

I know you design that bird but I know nothing of how it is made. My plan was to basically make the airframe like a normal balsa airplane and try to get the thinnest possible foam and slowly bend it into shape. Is there a different way to do this? I know you could "score" or cut the inside of the foam to get it to shape but then rather than a circle it creates folds and would make a bunch of flat surfaces. The foam can flex quite a bit so I figure if I keep flexing it over things with a big radius and keep working it to the correct radius then it might work. Thats about all I got.

One of the main problems is that the PET shrinks down so damn tight! The main blank can be balsa, it needn't be too special, as long as it is not too soft. What I commonly do is cut a sheet of 3mm ply to the same shape as any flat surfaces on the canopy (floor and the part that mates against the front and rear formers typically) Which protects the balsa blank and stops the plastic from shrinking around the plug's straight edges and rounding them off.

Something like the attached would be good. Balsa plug shown in blue, Ply for strength shown in red.

Awesome! Thanks for the help. I didn't know if I would be able to make a clear canopy but now I can! Thanks.

Here are pics of the fuse so far. It is comming along slowly as this is my first time to build a foamy from my own plans and it is not a profile so there is a bit of a learning curve. Besides, I just don't have all the time in the world either.
