Hey Jared - I've met you out at Buder Park before. You have my old re-built Funtana. Anyway, if you are gonna go 1/4 with gas, I might suggest going 30% with a 50cc?? There are several good 50cc Yaks out there. Also of interest would be the new Wild Hare 50 cc Extra 300. Good price and supposed to be quite a bit lighter than their previous 50 cc Extras. I think you should shoot for 84 to 87 inch wingspan and you'll find the cost is not much more than the 25% Yak with gas. 1/4 scale is a tough size to do good 3D on gas because of wingloading so maybe go a little bigger for not much extra cash....

I've flown one. Fly's very very good. It had a DA 50 in it. For sure i would put a DA 50 in that plane. A lot more better than a fuji 43 (IMO). Also alot more power! Remember that you could use the DA 50 on a 30%er later on. Fuji 43 wouldnt be enough for and 30%ers.

It's too small for a 50cc class engine. You need a minimum of 1300 square inches of wing area for a 50cc engine to have a light enough wingloading. Save a couple hundred extra bucks and go with the somenzini or BME Yak. They are the lightest weight/wingloading in their class.

Also, if you are not dead set on a Yak, take a look at the Wild Hare Extra....it's only $29 more than the Great Planes Yak. It's all about wing loading for 3D so might be worth a few extra bucks to go up to 28 - 30%. Another light new plane I've seen is the Airwild 29% Extra 260. It's supposed to weigh under 15 lbs with a DA 50.

I'd say if you haven't bought ANYTHING yet... check out the Wild Hare 33% extra 260 or Edge 540 package deals! For about $300 more than you'd pay to properly set up a 30% with GOOD gear you can re-use on a bigger plane you can have everything needed to fly!
I have the 260 and its a GREAT plane!

I havent bought anything YET... I've really just been shopping around looking for the best deals and comparing specs and stuff. I would much rather go with the 30%, i just thought it would be less money if i went a little smaller. I guess i'll go ahead and rock it out with a 30% gasser.
what I TRUELY want is a Aviation Models 30% yak54 with a DA50, but damn that engine is expensive..... |

Here's the thing though.
Buy the DA... keep it in GOOD shape. And new you pay $600 bones for the motor. You can use it for 2 years... and still sell it for $550. Da's hold thier value like a GOLD bar. BUT peep this link... http://www.wildharerc.com/Deals/deals.html I wish I would have skipped 30% planes all together.. 33% flies 10 times better than 30%. Check it OUT!

going with 33% would be a dream come true, but even if the cost is only a couple bones more,
the transportation problem peeks its ugly head. i'll be lucky enough to fit a 30% in my vehicle without buying a trailer! *crosse's fingers* |

Yea.. I had that problem a while back... this hobby has a grasp so tight on me that I sold my car and bought a .... gulp .... extended mini van! (NEVER THOUGHT I'D EVER OWN ONE!)
But the size difference between 30% and 33% and transportation can be tricky, BUT, remember that the stabs do come off and with clever placement I was able to fit a 33% plane, and a funtana 90 into a 4 door sedan. Do some measurments, and figure it out... A AM 30% YAK does fly really nice, and you would not be un happy with it... but if your like 90% of guys... you'll get the "BIGGEr is BETTER" bug, and then sell the 30% and go for something bigger.. I guess my whole point is.. really asses your situation and think about what you want to do before dumping your loot. Cause even a MINT 30% plane is going to loose money when you sell it, and if you can, I'd just go with the next size up.. maximize your loot. BUT once again... I'm sure you would be stoked with either size! Good luck... when you decide on a plane post your thoughts, there are enough guys that have owned all teh planes, some one can give you some honest opinions on your possible setup and equipment list!
