Default Troy Built/Roman Built 35% Extra 260

Here are some shots of my new 35% Extra 260. It is the Troy Built, now Roman Built Extra. Just need to finish up covering, paint and equipment install. It's starting to look like an airplane so I took some pics. The word around town is that this plane will come in around 23 lbs or less with a DA 100. Based on my initial weighing and factoring in the equipment, it should make it under 23 lbs.

This plane comes jig built so really all I am doing is the covering, paint and equipment install. I hope to have it ready to go around Sept 1.....looking forward to it!

Aviti,

That is a great looking airplane that you have there. I see you have some cans of lusterkote in the background. Are you pretty good with lusterkote? If you are, I would like to talk with you about it. Please let me know.

Ifly - The last few cowls I painted, I used automotive but it was so expensive I am gonna use Lusterkote. I used Lusterkote about 5 years ago on a cowl with reasonable success. I figure if it doesn't look good I can strip it off and go with auto paint. With 3 colors auto paint would cost a fortune though.

With about 1850 sq inch wing area I'm hoping it will be riddiculously light wing loading and great 3D. My 35% Edge is about 4 lbs heavier and 3d's very good so hoping this one will be incredible.

Man that 260 is looking sweet so far but please don't use the Lustercrap paint. There are ways to get a great paint job without spending a ton of money. Go down to your local Dupont paint dealer and get a quart each of Select prime and Select clear along with a quart of reducer. Those could run you just under 100.00 and will be your biggest cash outlay. You will also have lots left over for future projects.

Pacta R/C car paints Sprint White is a dead on match for white Monokote, your cowl and wheel pants will eat up 4 cans @ 5.00 ea.

Radio South sells small quantities of Monokote matching paint. They are packaged up in 2oz and 4oz bottles and would be more than enough for your trim colors.

You should be able to get everything you need for 2 bills. yes the lusterkote will only cost 30.00 but it will also look like a 30.00 paint job. Think of it this way, 5% of the cost of the airplane is in paint if you spend the 200.00.

Thanks for the advice Shawn. I admit the Lusterkote concerns me....the last thing I wanna do is ruin a good covering job with a bad paint job on the cowl. By the way, do you recognize the tailwheels on the Extra and the Edge....both RC Blimp titanium....

Yoyo - It may be tough to get your hands on one. Troy Built sold the 35% design to Roman Built Models. This one was built by Roman but not sure if he is building any right now. Of course Dalton builds a 35% now too but Tony has made some changes to the design...mainly went from built up fully sheeted wings to foam wings. There's also a guy who was selling a few of these on RCU....he calls himself Mockingbird Aviation.

Aviti,
A guy who flys at my field has one of these with a DA-100 in it and he says it weighs 24 lbs. And watching it fly I believe it is that light, it flys sweet!!!! He has it for sale for $3200 for everything R.T.F.. I was thinking about buying it but I dont really like the color scheme he has on it and thought if I could get one ready to cover I would put a ZDZ super 80 in it. He says it has foam ribs in the wing and then sheeted over those. Wish I could get my hands on one of these. Just found this web site, looks like you can still get them. http://www.romanbuiltmodels.com/

Are you putting one or two servos on the ailerons? The guy at my field only has one 8611 on each aileron. Not sure if this is a problem or not...it seems to fly just fine with one. Just curious.

Mine was built for just one servo per aileron. I will be running 5955's and from what I've heard it is fine on this plane as light as it is. The ailerons are built up fully sheeted and seem very stiff. I think it will be ok. Mine has balsa ribs vs the foam but I have seen them built with the foam ribs too.

I got interested in this plane about a year ago and got lucky getting one as Roman had some buyers back out. Unfortunately he doesn't build them full time like Tony Russo at Dalton so who knows how long it would take to get one...

I'll give a full flight report when I get it in the air.

I can almost give you the flight report right now...your gonna love it!!!! Just imagine this thing with the light weight super zdz 80. A 35% plane that weighs 22-23 lbs or less with unlimited vertical...yeeehaaa. I have a 33% H9 extra at 25 lbs with the silver head zdz 80 and it has plenty of power. Let me know how yours turns out.
