With the NSRCA's District 4 Pattern season winding down and just a couple left to go, another weekend of competition and fun was had in Quincy, OH on August 12th and 13th. The TORCS flying club held the 4th annual Andrew Herider Memorial Pattern Contest.
With 21 pilots and some of the most beautiful flying weather you will ever encounter, a great time was had by all. There was only one mishap, that being Steve Maxwells motor and ESC ejecting itself from the airplane while he competed in FAI. Steve did an awesome job of saving the airframe, even with 2 lbs. missing from the nose...talk about tail heavy!!! The plane was brought down with no damage that I could see, other than the minor damage to the cowl opening. Great save Steve!! The CD for the event was Bruce Herider. He, along with some members of his club, did an great job of running the contest. I would be remiss if I did not mention the very special job his wife Sandy and his daughter did in preparing lunch for the pilots both Saturday and Sunday, thanks ladies, they sure know how I like my burgers!! Another special thanks goes to Bob Kane who brought his computer and scoring software, and acted as special adviser to the scoring team, who also deserve a big salute for the job they did!! As has been tradition on Saturday night, there was dinner and drinks at the local Applebees, I don't remember hearing any complaints and Pattern guys normally let you know if there is a problem As for the quote of the weekend? While standing for the group picture on Saturday morning, I, being the normal quiet individual that I am, said," Hey!! Who's hand was that?" Arch Stafford pipes in with, "Whoa!! Ken...you been working out?" Nice!!! Thanks Arch Here's a link to short vid I took of Arch and his 40% Extra. I missed the catching the first hover due to a camera malfunction, I even have dumb thumbs with my camera http://www.flyinggiants.com/gallery/...1&limit=recent In the photos that follow, it's important to note the ones of Bruce and Sandy Herider holding a plaque made with the rudder of Mike Darr's former Oly. If you look close you can see the graphic on the rudder that states," In Memory of Andrew Herider, Great Friend and Pilot." Mike gave the rudder to Bruce and Sandy, I believe 2 years ago, and they had it framed...a very touching tribute to a very well liked man, their son, Andrew Herider. You will also notice the picture is taken with Mike Darr's USA Star in the foreground, which is the type of plane that Andrew flew in competition. The pilots placed as follows, Sportsman 1. Paul Futey 4000.0000 2. Michael Cilles 3647.7852 Intermediate 1. Gerald Price 4000.0000 2. Ron Hansen 3844.4128 3. Ken Thompson 3777.2617 4. Dowayne Gould 3698.0427 Advanced 1. Dennis Bodary 3985.0030 2. Mike Darr 3982.0850 3. Dave Johnstone 3903.2740 4. Matt Finley 3827.9651 5. Ken Alexander 3699.0877 6. Tom Weedon 3590.2685 7. Bob Schofield 3350.3852 Masters 1. Arch Stafford 4000.0000 2. Verne Koester 3947.8963 3. Steve Miller 3916.0755 4. Neil Fosnaugh 3747.2551 5. Bob Kane 3636.1768 FAI 1. Ray Morton 4000.0000 2. Bob Mairs 3653.9885 3. Steve Maxwell 2217.7664 Lost motor on 3rd flight, hence the low score. Last edited by Boulder; 08-14-2006 at 07:23 AM. |

Thanks Boulder for the nice article. Do you have a list of what the pilots were flying by chance? Would you happen to have any more pics of the flightline?
Thanks, jamie |

Hey Jamie,
Thanks for the compliment. The list you see above is a complete list of the pilots that competed. I'll check to see if I have some more detailed pics of the flight line. |

Sorry I missed it Ken. Who ever we were talking to at the Michigan event told us it was in September. Then when we were leaving that weekend to take my friend home I saw that it was that same weekend, so there was absolutley no way to fit it in.

You missed a good time, Doug!
There is one in St. Clairsville, OH in September, I think the 9th and 10th. I won't be making that one, I'll be at the Thistledown Flyers event that weekend. |

You definitley missed a good one. It is one of the best flying sites that we get to fly off of during the contest season. I really enjoy going to that event every year. Besides I have a little bit of an attachment to that particular contest. Andy Herider was a very good friend of mine, he is greatly missed. Mike Darr |

Tell me how much money you want to spend, and I'll tell you what pattern plane to buy.
