A little more done. Finally cut the ailerons loose. This is always a bit daunting for me even though I've built many foam core wings before.

I don't have a bandsaw, so I used a good old #11 blade. I first taped the straight edge to the wing in the exact location to part the aileron off. Then I cut a little at a time while erring on the inside of the cut, so I left extra to sand off.

The whole thing went really well, and the aileron came off perfectly. I also got to see 'inside' the wing and verify that the sheeting bonded into place very well.

I spent most of the weekend helping with a wedding, but I did manage to get some work done...

I glued on the hingeline blocks and let them dry overnight. After shaping them even with the skins, I marked the centerlines with a Dubro centerline tool and picked out the hinge locations. I would have prefered to do hingepoints, but the rest of the airframe is done in pinned flat hinges.

After cutting all of the hinge slots with a power slotting tool, I test fit everything together. Everything fit relatively well, so I marked the ends for the proper bevel on each piece and went to it with the razor plane. A new blade made the cuts nice and consistent. I used a hobby knife and sanding block in the last couple of inches on the wing where the plane would not reach.

Finally, I'm at the point where I can put the hard points in the wing and I'll basically be done with the wing and have it ready to cover...

Time for some more paint work....

Great Job Jeremy, can't wait to see it finished. You do some awesome work, and after seeing your other planes... I know it's done right!

Hope to see you fly it soon

Thanks Anthony! You got that Yak trimmed yet?

I bet ya'll thought this project fell of the face of the earth.....

I've actually gotten a lot done on the bird and collected some pictures along the way..

I got the hardpoints in the ailerons mounted and now I just need to cover the wing.

I managed to get the wrecked wheel pants straightened, and re painted as well as doing that for the lower cowling half. I also have the bevels on the aileron done, and hinges in place.

On the gear side, I managed to get 4 of the servos and a reciever. That leaves me needing the battery power system, and the other 4 servos.

The cowling half needs a black stripe and clearcoat to be finished.

BTW, I did all the paint work with TopFlite Lustrecoat paint. I had a couple of runs on the first try as I was not used to shooting this paint through a rattlecan, but a little wet sanding between coats made those problems disappear. I'm pretty pleased with the clear on the wheelpants as well, it turned out very nicely, and I got good even coverage. The key with Lustrecote is to use very faint coats 3mins apart. Work slowly and don't overdo it to get shine. Wait for the clearcoat to create the shine!

Looks like you are doing a great job on this bird.....

I remember Chip flying this plane. He had crashed his own and borrowed this one, though I can't remember from who, and did an excellent job of flying it to win the first XFC

Thanks Nicco and Cappy! I'm glad you remember the plane! I used to get a kick out of learning the history of the motorcycles and cars I restored. When I found out the history of this bird, I knew it had to be restored....

A couple of guys asked me how I got the paint done as good as I did.... Here is what I sent to them....

Painting with Lustrecote - The stuff won't quite do as nice a job as true automotive paints with appropriate spraying equipment, but it does pretty well when used right. On my Carden, the hatch was done with automotive as was the top of the cowling. The bottom half of the cowling is being done with the Rattlecan paint as part of my repairs.

I start by prepping the part and getting it smooth. Use whatever method you need to. On that cowling, I actually used Bondo filler putty (heavy stuff) and sanded a lot to keep the weight down.

I use a small electric 'mouse' sander in place of automotive style airpowered sanders for shaping the spot filler. I'll also use this tool with 100 grit paper to rough the entire surface to be painted.

Next, I use Rustoleum primer to prime the surface to be painted. I wet sand with 400 grit on a block between coats, and look for low and high spots. I'll fix them as necessary.

Finally, I lay on the color with the Lustrecote. I use very light coats. The first coat looks like I just dusted the part with paint. Next coat makes it look like it has a good coating. Oftentimes, I'll wetsand this coat lightly with 400 grit on a block. Final coat makes it appear completely covered. Occasionally, I'll lay on a final shiny coat if I don't plan to lay on clear.

For the clearcoat, it helps to knock off the ridges where the tape was lightly with 400 or 600 grit on a block before laying the clear. Spraying the clear is similar to the color coat, but a bit harder to guage because its harder to see.

You can get even higher shine by letting the clear or color coat sit for approx a week and buffing lightly with automotive buffing compounds (lightly abrasive, don't use the heavy cut stuff) and following up with a waxing.

I hope this helps someone else do a similar repair!

Well, the wife had to work late so I got some more done on the bird....

I mounted the other hardpoint in the aileron. Permanently re-mounted the wheelpants and got the lower cowling half striped with black. I took about 20 mins to tape off the stripe, and it was worth it, as the stripe is pretty well placed.

Three major tasks left.

Re-mount cannisters (have to make mounts first)

Cover new wing

Install radio (have not purchased all of it yet....)
