After hearing others birds with standard muffs, I think I'll like the pipes.

That's just not right....Don't you like airplane noise??

I just found this thread...A fatty like this via your thumbs will be a thing of beauty.

Looks great man!

Thanks Chris You need to come up to Memphis sometime and fly with us again!

Got some more done over the past few days.

Finalized the tank mount. I can now pick up the airplane and shake it by the tank, so I feel pretty confident about the mount's strength. I also ran fuel lines. Just need a T-Joint to finish the plumbing. Wire spring clips on every fuel joint in the plane for security.

I also got the ignition wires cleaned up, braced and covered in a no-rub wrapping to protect the braided covers.

I made a throttle pushrod and installed it. Carbon tube with 4-40 rod epoxied into each end. I also wrapped the ends with kevlar thread fishing rod style for strength. Ball links make the connections for no-metal-to-metal contact.

I determined I had the headers in backwards so they were touching the motor box . Flipping them around gave me the clearance I needed.

I installed the 'DA' Fuel dot in the side of the plane and mounted a small ply reinforcement to mount it to. I turned it in my lathe first to bring back the shine.

Finally, I rebuilt the original carb box in the bottom of the cowling and made some ducting for the bottom half of the cowling. The original did not have it, but all my other local flying buddys have gotten as much as a 15-30 degree temp drop by getting some carefully done ducting in place....... I cobbled this together, then fiberglassed it with light glass cloth for strenth. I'll paint it tomorrow evening.

Jeremy,
You are not going to like to hear this but I have to put in my two cents. A fuel leak in a Carden is NOT A GOOD thing. Get rid of the stock Dubro stopper and put an SWB in there. Myself, Biff, Mike Sauls, and countless others have had those split open and there is nothing left but sheeting when you take the hatch off!!! Much easier than rebuilding the bottom of the fuse. See ya when we get the meattrays back out. Later Jason

Thanks for the suggestion Jason (foamy season ain't far off is it ). For $4.49 that sounds like a really good cheap insurance policy. I just added a stopper to the order I'm about to send off for the remaining parts.....I'd rather spend a couple of bucks and 20mins of time than much more in both $'s and time later.

Well, I could not stand it, and had another 45 mins to work, so I glued in the hinges for the wing I built.... I first coated the hinge barrels in a light coat of oil, while making sure to get it down into the pins. Then I cut the tip off a 'Cajun Injector' from the grocery store. I flattened the metal tip with my vise and made a perfect Gorilla glue injector for the hinges. It worked like a charm After gluing and inserting all the hinges, I taped the hingeline in place to keep the glue from pushing the hinges out. I don't know if it would do that, but previous experience with gorilla glue told me I needed to do something.

Now that is a cool idea. I'll have to keep that in mind for the next airplane I build. Your rebuild looks great Jeremy!

This is simply incredible. It's one thing to do a perfect build from a bare kit, but to do what you have done with what you had to work with is absolutly amazing. Well done

Thanks ya'll!

I'll finish this thing yet.... Everything I need to finish the plane is now ordered and on the way. I hope it won't be too long yet to get her in the air.

I forgot to mention the other work I did Sunday afternoon. The original gear was painted white to match the pants, but it was mangled when I got it.

I ordered new gear and opted to save a few bucks by getting the unpolished gear. After getting it mounted and looking at it for a few weeks, I realized that it was either going to have to be painted or polished (which is what I chose to do)

I pulled the gear off the plane and got out some wet/dry 1500 grit paper. With a bucket of water to wet the paper in, I proceded to sand down the legs. I was careful to only sand lengthwise on the metal, as I did not plan on polishing too much..... crosswise sanding only leaves ugly scratches and does not help the look.

After taking the metal down to a smooth finish all the way round, I got out my "Mother's" mag and aluminum polish. I buffed the legs with the polish on an old ragged scrap of bath towel until the shine started to come out. After getting it to the amount of sheen I wanted, I buffed it out with a clean cotton rag.

The resulting landing gear is pretty good looking. Not so polished that it will look like crap with a little wear, but not the dull alu look either.

Total time to get that done, including removing the gear and replacing it was an hour. I'll try to get a better pic up of it later..

Dude, you've got way more patients and skills than I can ever hope to have. That plane would look great with primer pink landing gear and wheel pants Keep up the good work, and if I ever kill my Carden Giles 202 I know who to call to make it look new (Lord knows I couldn't pull it off).

Thanks Roadbuilder The restoration has been fun!

I managed to get all the gear installed today. A vacation day kept me home from work and got me the opportunity to put it all together and dialed in.

Here's a few pics of the radio and tank install, as well as the baffling on the cowl that I eventually had to rip out. I glued that baffling in while the cowling was not on the airplane, and was therefor slightly deformed. It kept that shape when bolted to the plane and kept the upper half from seating correctly, so I got out a sharp knife and cut it out... . I'll re-do it later...

Thanks Johnny!

Yup, the Edge took to the air yesterday for the first time in several years.....

After working through an ignition problem with the DA (bad hall-effect sensor wire) and replacing the offending components, she roared to life. We (me and Jack01) spent about an hour tuning the twin to run with the cans I put on it.

After a couple of safety checks, I took it up for a check flight. Everything checked out, and we tuned the engine some more to get it runnign right in the cowling...

Then I put it up again, and started to wring it out. Everything went very well. I have the CG just a bit too far forward, so I'll re-locate some of the batts further back in the fuse to get it right. I'm also pretty sure that the prop I'm running is not worth much... reasonably good top end, but not much punch in the hover pull-out department. Will be changing that shortly...

All in all, I'm extremely pleased with the new bird. It handles great, is much more nimble than I thought it would be, and looks great in the air (I'm waiting for a buddy to email me some in-flight pictures) I'm getting much more comfortable with the 'Giant Scale' feel of the bird, in flying it and just in handling it in the pits and in the shop. The DA runs flawlessly, just as I expected.

I've got vid of the first flights, but instead of just posting it here, I figured I'd make my first Gasser entry in the FGVC, so it will be there instead...
