Default ESC getting hot in just a 1 minute or so?

my castle creations 18amp esc was geting hot and making a weird smell in less than a minute or so wen i plugged in the battery(thunder power1320ma). is this is normal? could it be from the wires hat plug into the motor r touching? its not pluged into the motor and the ends r exposed so were the tips just touching? and wen i plug in the battery, the beeps r very low and u can barely hear them.could it be that the battery is low on my lipo? i havent charged it yet and i had just soldered te connecters on the other day and this was the third time u pluged te battery into the esc. does anyone know wats happening? thanks

Armon

Touching wires together will short out the ESC you might have connected the battery backwards. Make sure red is to red and black is to black.

If the ESC is getting hot after the battery is plugged in with no throttle applied, then it's bad and needs to be sent in for repair or replacement. Is it new or have you used it before?

If any of the 3 motor wires are touching each other the ESC will not be able to spin up the motor and you will kill the ESC if you run it up. (You've shorted the output). Make sure you either use insulated connectors or you insulate the motor connectors with heat shrink or electrical tape.

Are you using the BEC feature of the speed control? That is: is the speed control being used to power a receiver and handful of servos? Running these servos could be what is causing your ESC to get warm (warm...not HOT!). The ESC heats up during the process of stepping down your 12.6V from the lipo to 5V for the receiver. The more current your servos draw the hotter the ESC will get.

If the ESC gets so hot you can't hold it anymore, then there's something very wrong. If it's getting slightly warm while running a couple of servos, that's no big deal.

ESCs don't like to be powered up without a motor connected to them. With some ESCs, doing so means instant smoke. With others, it takes a while longer.

And most brushless ESCs use the motor as a buzzer. Without a motor connected, I'm surprised you heard any beeps at all.

Try it with a motor connected and your problems will probably go away if you haven't already fried the ESC.
