Default Aerotech 50cc Yak build (Boulder/Sleepy BET!!!)

Ok folks,

The Yak has arrived!!! This is none other than the plane that Sleepy won in the Aerotech scheme design contest!! I will be building this plane for Sleepy.

The gear I will be using will be as follows,

All stock hardware
Hitec 5925 servos on ailerons and elevators
Hitec 5955 on the Rudder
Hitec 605 on the throttle
Hitec 225 on the choke
2200 mAh LiIon for the ignition with a MPI regulated switch, 5.4V
2-2100 NiMH Sanyo packs with 2-MPI HD switches
Futaba Synthesized receiver
and for the main component,
A ZDZ-80 RV on the nose, older silver head version.

This plane will be built as per specs except for some minor strengthening in the firewall to handle the torque of the more powerful motor.

I have a bunch of pics starting with the unopened carton to the individual parts.

I will have weights tomorrow, there will be no building tonight.

The rest of the pics for today.

Notice all of the lightening holes, this is going to be sweet!!! Also, take a look at the way the cowl mounts, 4 pins go into the holes in F1 and are held in with set screws, nice clean attachment.

For all to know, this will be a complete and honest construction and flight performance thread. I will be attempting to complete the construction and flight test of this airplane by September 6th so the plane will be ready for the Thistledown Flyers event in Nepoleon, OH.

On with the pics,

Default Re: Aerotech 50cc Yak build

I just had to go out and weigh the parts, they are as follows,

Fuse w/cowl and hatch 73.4 oz.
Right wing w/aileron 24.6 oz.
Left wing w/aileron 24.4 oz.
Right stab w/elevator 3.8 oz.
Left stab w/elevator 4.6 oz.
Rudder w/vertical stab 6.2 oz.
Landing gear w/wheel pants 11.2 oz.
Wing and stab tubes 6.7 oz.
Canopy 6.3 oz.
Hardware package 8.4 oz.

The total comes to 169.6 oz.

or 10.6 lbs.

We will have to see where the final weight will end up.

Aerotech lists the DA-50 and the 3W-50 as good choices for this model. If I use the weights on the websites that sell these engines, the ZDZ-80 weighs the same as the 3W and about 1 lb. more than the DA-50.

I'm hoping for a final weight of about 18 lbs. for this plane, maybe slightly more.

C'mon Ken you have had this plane for almost two days now. You don't have this thing done yet? Or are you just holding out on us? Now if you are going to start a build thread, I would expect that you take it a little more seriously, now get to work and get some updates on this thread, or we are going to have to close it for lack of activity.

MIKE...

I'll go one step further...

I BET KEN CAN'T FINISH THE PLANE TO FLY HANDS OFF TRIMMED AND LEVEL BY BY 10AM ON 9/8 AT THE THISTLEDOWN FLY IN!!

IN FACT I'M SO CONFIDENT HE CAN'T DO IT... IF HE DOES HE CAN KEEP IT!
(THATS HOW I ROLL!)

NOW... the plane MUST fly completely trimmed, and perfectly balanced...
when taking off... no trim adjustments will be allowed.... just stick inputs to get it up to around 100'... and then one pass from right to left hands off...
(a slight altitude loss is ok... but NO right to left motion!.. within reason)

If he dosen't do it... I get my plane... the motor and the servos that he installed....

What ya SAY KENNY?!!? UP FOR a CHALLENGE?!?!?!?!
