Default Great Planes Ultimate 160 e-conversion

A couple of folks have suggested I start a thread over here on this plane, so here goes

I recently purchaced a Great Planes Ultimate 160 and converted it to electric power.

I used a Neu motors 1515 2Y w/6.7/1 HD geard box turning a Mejzlik 22x12E prop at about 6400 rpm. Its flying on 12S1P 5000 packs (Tanic/Enerland cells) and pulling 71 amps at a tad over 3100 watts on a fresh charge. All up weight is right at 15 pounds, so Im a little over 200 watts/pound.

Performance is awesome! Its my favorite plane!

It has some roll and pitch coupleing in KE, but nothing too bad. Im still getting it dialed in. Its easy to hover, rolls and snaps super fast and track beautifully.

I like it so much, I already re-built it after putting it into a 80ft tall tree and breaking both wings!

Here are a couple of pics. I have some video if anyone is interested - crash footage and some mild flying.

I need to get a new sticker - the 2Kw is outdated

By the way - this ARF is outstanding! Easily one of the very best I have seen. Everything fit the way it should, was straight and true. I had almost no gripes - which for me is unusual!

I highly recomend it!

Here is the crash video... it still hurts to watch it!

This video and the next one were both done while I was still flying on 10S and only around 2300 watts

Its got a LOT more power now

This video was the second flight after the maiden. I was still taking it easy, but you can see Im getting a little used to it already. It flys beautifully. Its a breeze to land too. Back off the throttle and it settles into a perfect attitude and slows down very nicely!

Nice job! This looks like the work of those e-flightline.com guys! They definitely make it simple..."Your plane weighs how much? Okay, here's your power system, have a nice day!"
I have this Ultimate and wanted to go electric, but already had an engine on order. That's okay, I'm working my way up with a 60-size E-conversion I just finished 10 minutes ago. I will have a GS electric some day...

LOL! that background engine noise was so befitting! You can hear it running like crap, going lean, and dying!

You got it! The motor/gear box, motor mount, Mejzlik prop and prop adaptor are all from E-Flightline. Great folks to deal with!

Good guess

After a typical 8-10 minutes of flying I put back about 2500-3000 mahr depending on how hard I fly.

I only do one flight per charge.

i would like to do an electric conversion, is it worth it. Is the wait between flights to charge worth a ten minute flight. Im interested in a comp-arf 2by2 extra for IMAC.

P.S. Im snaprollsoda Just on a diffrent comp.

The days of 2 flights per charge are over ..... using multiple flight packs of lower capacity is a much better plan
in other words dont buy 1 8,000 ma pack and try to get 2 flights out of it
buy 2 4,000 ma packs instead.
same true for almost any size conversion now with larger hi c cells avail
like 5,000 ma and even 10,000 ma cells
now all my packs are 1p packs no paralell anymore.
it easier on packs because many packs are damaged on the 2nd half of flight when trying to get 2 flights from 1 charge, battery is very vulnerable.

I even fly a 30% extra 260 on 12s1p 3700 cells , 10 minute flights

I have 3 sets, so I can fly all day with charging.

So here we are just before Christmas 2008, and I was wondering what power packages (motor, ESC, batteries and props) are out there now that would make this wonderful conversion even better?
