That is a good looking cover job!

How much does it weigh? My old Funtana 90 ended up over 10 pounds all up. That Medusa motor is going to be on the small side I afraid.

this one weighs 6.5 lbs as it is right now, everything ecxept the power system, rx, and aileron servos. If that motor is too small, does medusa even carry anything bigger than the MR-036-050-1000-5?

OK, I have the money, and think Im going to get the Medusa MR-036-050-1000-5. I plan to get the monster gearbox, does anyone know what gear ratio I need? Maybe about 7:1? For batteries I plan to use a 12s 3000mAh Lipo. Hopefully everything will work out...

Well, I got to thinking and came to the conclusion that the Hacker C50 16XL or a Neu 1515 2Y might be the best motor for this setup. It is pricey, but it might be worth it. Also, at 12S I would only need to pull about 45 amps to get 2000 watts, so my ESC would be fine. I still like the price and low weight of the Medusa, but I don't want it to blow up on me. Any thoughts would be apreceiated. I'll let you know how things go...

You are considering vastly different motors. There is a good reason for the price differences.

The Medusa is the smallest and lightest of the bunch AND is only rated to 569 watts. It could probably be pushed to 1000 watt peaks with a lot of throttle management. I think you'd be pushing this one too hard unless you only want to do sport flying with mild aerobatics.

The Hacker C50 is the heaviest and is an easy 2500 watt motor with some throttle management. It would do more than fine on your conversion.

The Neu is easily good to over 3000 watts. Im running mine at 3100 watts peak on a 15 pound plane now. It has the potential to fly a much larger plane and is really over kill in this case. But that could be fun too

So your comparing apples to oranges

Keep in mind that weight is very very important to performance and how much fun the plane will be to fly.

I'd consider the smaller Neu 1512 2Y on 10S (12S is to much) with a Neu gear box at 6.7/1. That will save you some money on packs and motor and at least 1/2 a pound in weight.

The Monster box will not be able to handle much over 1000-1200 watts max, so its not a great choice either for anything other than the Medusa.

OK, makes sense. I like the Neu 1512 2Y on 10S...37 volts x 55 amps=2035 watts. The HV-45 should be able to handle 55 amps in a short burst, so the power should be sweet. Also, pulling 55 amps from a 3000mAh lipo=18c which shouldn't be a problem. At 10s, the motor will turn 51800rpm, so if I gear it 6.7:1 it will be a little over7700 rpm, so I would probably need something like a 17x10 prop or maybe smaller? Only remaining question then is how do I make a 10s pack-do I just connect 5 2s packs? I assume that using 2 3s packs and 1 4s pack would lead to unequal discharging between the packs and trash them...

Id go for 2 5S packs on a series conector.

2ea 3S and 1ea 4S wold work just fine as long as they were all the same capacity. There would not be any uneven discharge going on between the packs.

Good luck!

I forgot - on the prop selection - go to the Neu motors web site. they have a calculator that will get you in the ballpark

http://www.neumotors.com/

Select the motor, gear ratio and pack size - then play with props to get your desired amp draw. It should be close.

Well Larry, I thought about it for a long time and realized that the Neu 1515 was the best choice because if i ever want to, I should be able to use it in a 50CC sized plane. For the time being, I will have sick power on the funtana. The batteries just came in, I bought two sets of three 4s 1P packs to make two 12s 1p 2200 packs. Ordered the NEU 1515 today, 6.7:1 Neu gearbox and custom motor mount, APC 18x12, and I already have the Phenix HV-45. The plane is completely setup except the motor, so as soon as the motor gets here it should be goos to go. Im definitely excited about this one!!!

Thats an awesome motor!

Your going to be on the heavy side for that plane, but as you said - sick power
