I just bought a basically brand new (2 flights) H9 Edge to compliment my Cap. It's 23.5lb's on the dot with a ZDZ 80 WITH the smoke system installed. They're awesome knock around 3D planes, IMO. They are built light but strong and have absolutely no bad habits. It's about the most 'friendly' plane you can buy in this size.

Hi all,

I have just started looking for a larger plane to do IMAC and like the H9 stuff, seems well built etc etc.. just wondering one of the posts mentioned this plane doesnt fly precision that well, any other flight reports on how it does in the IMAC style flying ??? thanks..

I fly this model, and I pratice IMAC basic/ sportsman manuevers with it along with 3-D. With the CG in the correct spot, the H9 Edge fly's very straight, and will perform very straight point rolls, Humpty bumps, loops, cubans, immelmans, sharks tooth etc... Vertical snaps whether upline, or downline are very precise. Where it gets tough for the Edge, is the horizontial upright snap. It is difficult to get the Edge to exit this type of snap cleanly, but it can be done. Inverted snaps are clean. People fly the Edge 540 airframe in IMAC. I think one of the main reasons people choose the Extra airframe over the Edge in IMAC is because of the way the Extra exits snaps, more than anything else. At least that is what I am told by most Extra pilots.

3-D is a no brainer. The H9 Edge is absolutley awesome in this arena. With a 100cc engine in it such as mine, the plane is a power house, and still fly's as light as a feather.

I'm (FINALLY!) finishing mine up...DA100 and 8611A's all around. Need to baffle the cowl and glue on the canopy. Then, throws & programming (which always takes me forever.)

Hi all,

Thanks for the info, I have had two H9's, nitro birds and love them. Learned to fly on their twist 40 and currently am flying the funtana X100. both great planes. This seems like a great deal, good product, support etc.. plus its a great looking bird.

I flew one this past season in IMAC in the Basic class. First thing everyone said to me is how much my flying had improved from last year. It hadn't it is 98% the airframe.

It had a sick ZDZ 80 in it and at 24 lbs, that gave me mediocur performance until I tacked it and proped down in size to get the RPMs back up. I ended up turning an MSC 24x10 at 6200 rpm. With this setup it was like a new plane, unlimited vertical.

Nice big loops and slows down nicely on the downlines because of the straight leading edge. Spin entry is a little tough as it doesn't like to stall. Slows down to a crawl and you have to cheat it into a stal, (no judges read that right? )

The Rudder is big and very effective. You need to mix in some opposite aileron as it tends to drop the wing when rudder is applied. This is very necesary for nice straight uplines like in a hammerhead.

If you get a little low during your downlines and yank back on the stick to level out it seems to take the 90 degree turn without any tendancy to stal or drop a wing. It will turn on a dime.

I was going to sell mine but have since picked up a NIB ZDZ Super 80 and will fly next season with it. The Super 80 is only a couple of ounces heavier then the regular 80 but is reported as having just about as much power as a 100 cc engine. Time will tell!

Most of the guys I fly with in IMAC here in Canada are flying Extras, 260s, 300s, 330s ect. Not to many people flying any kind of Edges. Again these guys are saying what has been said above.. Gthe Edge is a great 3D machine but an so so precission aerobatics plane.

Al I know is I finally moved out of the basement this year with this plane and I am now within one or two spots of placing at contests. Hopefully next year wills e at least one 3rd place finish!

I don't do 3D so I can't comment on any of those flight qualitites.

Oh by the way... get rid of the F/G landing gear and put some TNT Aluminium gear on instead. The Landig gear plaate is also very fragile. i redid mine after a major gear pullout.

I am planning on getting an AM 33% Yak for next year so I will be able to compare the two then.

Here are some pics:

Put about 5 more flights on mine today. This thing gets better every time I fly it. I ended up putting 12% flaperon mix in it and it locked the harriers right in.
ZDZ 80, 22.5 lbs! Floats like a big foamy.

Horizon puts out some very fine products and they are all very reasonably priced. I have the H9 Extra and it was my first giant scale airplane. I've been very pleased with the way it flies with a ZDZ 80. It is a great plane to get started into IMAC and 3D. I also really like the service and support you get from Horizon. They have always been super. And, no I don't work there.

Hi all,
Just started putting one together i have a zenoah GT80 with Slim Line Smokers fitted , Has anyone ever flown this plane with a GT80 ??? havent found one review or post stating such? I realize that they are pushing their product when they recomend the g62 or GT80 and that they are heavy for their power output but they are a good engine reliable smooth running and no battery for ignition needed, I know Mike flew one I wonder if his has a GT80 fitted bet it doesnt !
Just like to hear from anyone or see a video of an edge with a GT80 in it and reinforcing recomendations such as the landing gear in this thread or links to any build threads . thanks . sean

The landing gear sucks. Mine started to delaminate right off the bat. I fixed it with thin CA and that held for a while. I just recently replaced it with Graphtech gear from Troy Built Models.

As far as a GT80, it will work but it is heavy. I have saw an old H9 extra fly with one and it was OK. It would hover and torque roll.

jason,
Jason,
I'm re-doing a buddy of mine's 33% CAP 232 from H-9 and he has 5645 MG's all through. They seem to have some slop on all of them. He's going to 6 volts to perk them up or just going to swap them out if the money suddenly appears. If you bang the sticks hard you might want to use something a bit beefier.
