PT Model Carbon Fiber Props !!!

Well I have always used Menz props on all my DA engines and have always liked them. I used to use Mezjlik carbon fiber props but stopped using them because of their heavy weight and it took longer for them to spool up. About a week ago I belly Flopped my 42% extra and broke the prop. I needed some stuff from troybuilt and decided to give these PT models props a try. According to the troybuilt site they are about 1/2 the weight of a menze prop and much much lighter than a Mejlzik. My first impression when I opened the box from the ups truck was man was this thing light. compared to my menz prop it is more than 1/2 the weight ! I promptly took it down to the shop to check how it faired on the prop ballancer. Perfect !!! it was dead nuts both laterally and the hub. Now it was time to drill it out and see how it performed on the plane. We tacked the 32 x 10 prop on the ground and got a reading of 5900 RPM !! about 100-150 rpm more than the same size menz!. Once in the air I noticed one thing immediately. There was absolutely no lag time on the throttle it was instantaneous. It pulled just as hard and accelerated just like the Menz prop. Down-line breaking was just as good as the Menz maybe a tad better. Best of all the prop was quieter than the menz allot quieter. I am sold on these props to the point that I will not use another menz. I switched props to a menz for one flight today just to make sure I was not coming to false conclusions and I hated it mainly because I could notice a huge difference in lag time on the throttle from the menz being heavier. They are more quiet than a menz or other wood props. More quiet than a mejzlik IMO. However, you can still rip them if you let them wind up a lot.

My PT27X10 performed just as well as my Mezjlik 27X10 in the air, but at the cost of almost 100 RPM - and it was quieter. But the hub of the prop also compressed like it was a wood prop, to the point that the screws were only hand-tight after only one flight! This is not something I would expect from a CF prop, so it's a good thing I decided to do some maintenance under the cowl before my next flight! It also did not come even close to balancing right out of the box, but neither do any of my props. It's a good prop for the price, but I need the R's, so I'm keeping the Mezjlik and selling the PT if anyone is interested...make me an offer. It is drilled with the DA pattern.

bodyworks, have you tried a 26x10? I know its going to scream but Dick H says he gets the most power out of them compared to the 27-28" props up at his altitude.

My 27x10 PT works fantastic on my DA100 - great pull, great spool up, very quiet.

I had been using a 26x10 Mej on my ZDZ80 for quiet running but a JFX 25x10 was best but too noisy. So I figured a PT 25x10 would be the ticket... the 25x10 is getting 200 RPM less than the Mej 26x10 (25.5x10 if you actually measure it...) It could have just been that day... my muffler was lose when I got home and my fuel was a bit long in the tooth. The PT seems to load the engine a bit more than Mej. I'll do some more testing next weekend.

The PT prop hubs are not as solid as Mej ... the material is MUCH softer when you drill it. You need to be careful not to over torque the bolts or you will deform/crack the hub.

All the PT and Mej props I have had have been perfectly balanced both tips and hubs - never had to touch them.

Bryan, how much does your extra weigh? I've got a JTEC Extra that it probably 40-41 lbs and am currently running a Mejzlik 32x10. I had thought about trying a Mej 30x12 but am thinking about giving the PT prop a try. I have never run a Menz prop so I don't have anything to compare it to. Have you (or anyone) compared the 32x10 Mej to the 32x10 PT on a heavy airframe?

I ran a 32x10 on my H9 Ultiamte. I also have seen an increase in RPM but further investigation the props overall measurement is 1/4" smaller then the Mezj, Runs good great performance.

I am currently breaking in a Da 100 with a NX 27x10 prop. Is there any advantage in going to a 28x10 after break-in? Just curious because i was going to try the PT prop.

Do you still have the prop or was it a borrowed prop? You are running the P-TIP now right?

I have been running this prop on my J-tech edge I have never weighed the plane but would guess somwhere around 40lbs + / - . The 32x10 works great for it.

I tried a Menz 26X10 and didn't like it at all. I was under the same impression about running smaller props, which is why I went with the 27. But everyone out here that has killer vertical and decent hover pull-out is running a Mezjlik 28X10, so that will be my next prop.
