Default One Design, DR-109 - ANYONE?

So I'm eyeballin different airframes looking for something original to build...
and I came across this plane... again...

Seems like a while back it was very very popular.. and now.... (chirp chirp) NOTHING.

So whats the deal?

Anyone currently making a production of this plane?

Really quite curious!

The one design was a nimble SOB but nothing that would draw a very straight line. Had a pink one that would scoot!! The DR-109 is another story. I flew the first one built in the US that I know of years ago. Wayne Henderson of Hangar 1 built one for Warren Thomas. The plane flew very well, but was a touch too heavy. There are currently two sizes of the 109 that I would recomend. A 35% and and GREAT BIG 210 sized job. I've flown the smaller plane and loved it. It's light as a feather and draws really pretty lines. Wait one and I'll get the web site. I love the lines of the 109, it just never really caught on.

When I first started flying IMAC back in the mid-90's, I had two 107's from Troy Built .... back when there actually was a Troy. In fact, I still have one in storage, but no longer have the Saito 150 that was on it. Flew well, not too fast, not too slow, but the vertical left something to be desired. Still, if I could get a new one as a backup, I wouldn't hesitate.

I have the last surviving sibling of the plane Biff is talking about. . in the process of a rebuild of it. Warren had one. . Robert Clark too. A Total of 5 were built.

The 47% sold by the GB crew is HUGE, and not so nimble if you look at the video.

Great things bout the DR-109 . .

With a 10% stretch to the fuselage, it's actually longer than it's span. . the tail surfaces are pretty properly sized for the plane, and the wing tips make for softer roll characteristics than full span ailerons. A SWEET flying plane, and it OWNS the KE environment with that tall, flat-sided fuselage. You barely breath on the rudder for KE.

Mine will be at JN next year. . complete with new servos, DA-150 and ks-1090's, and a new color scheme.

hey, Sleepy. . maybe when I get it finished you could BUY IT. . . . .

The Votec by 3W is modelled after a modified 109 built in Europe.

I have the 35%er built by Dave G of GB Aircraft in Arlington Heights, IL.

Scratch built, the lightest plane in its class, and definitely a local legend around here. The 47% is nimble, you have to see it to believe it, also the lightest in it's class.

Pricey, and sometimes a waiting list, but the best always does.

Mine is done in the scale colors in the photos above, w/ a BME 102 EVO. Way beyond my capabilities , but I have a great trainer...the EF Yak 87"...I recently maidened the Dr at FVAC in St.Charles. it is a dream to fly. 3D's like the 87" Yak.

Dave and Dan's 47%ers regularly fly at FVAC. a real treat to watch. a 47 is on the board and available if any are interested. .....

Dan Rihn is also the original designer of what became the Zivko Edge 540....it's no fluke that this bird in 1:1 was a real competitor.

www.gbaircraft.com gets the nod from Dan Rihn to produce these wonderful models.

Did not know that Dan. The DR has some very nice lines. The Votec,,, ugh. Hey Sleepy, George Smith, a buddy of mine also does a pretty bitchin 109. He does a 35% and a 40%. Very light (not as light as GB I don't think) but a fine plane.

Here is a link to some pics of the fullscale Votec 322. I think you can see the resemblance to the 109 much more in the fullscale version than the stretched and molested version from 3W.
