Wayne,

We are working to come up with a new system.

Michael and I have a proposal that will be going to Dave for review, next week. Our goal is to get the system finalized and announced to the pilot community as quickly as we can.

As soon as I have the final details and the go ahead from Michael, I will post the details.

Regards,

Anna

Have any of you attended in the past?
I was thinking of hopping on a plane and checking it out this year but I want to make sure it's worth the trip.
Do you get to have a close look at their set up and ask questions?
That would make the whole trip for me.

Yea,
Definitely could use some details.
Costs?
Best days to attend?
What types of events take place other than flying?
Food?
Lodging?
Other activities in the area?
There's no way I could convince the family we're spending a week in Arizona watching R/C planes.
What's the weather like there in late October?
etc, etc, etc.

First off, the Shootout is definitely worth it. The quality of flying it incredible, and it is just plane fun.
However... there is a fence surrounding 'them from us', which may or may not be needed (good because the pilots and their equipment is much better safe-guarded (recall Leesberg lost 1.4k in batteries last year), bad because the pilots are much much less accessible. I had to sneak in just to take pictures....hopefully Max or Biff will get me a press pass of sorts to take more pics this year (hint hint).

The Cirkus Fly-in was fantabulous because you could and should and did talk to everyone about everything and every single person was happy to share knowledge and support in the name of fun and good times.

Go to the Shootout. Have fun. Don't expect to see QQ open up his bird for setup details.

Yahoo!! I can't wait!

As far as attending, if you want to get up close and personal, show up early (like Wed or Thur). The weekend has so many people there they have to use croud control and if your not a pilot or support crew for a pilot, judge scribe etc, you can't get in the gate (thank goodness, I'd hate to have that croud stumbling around in the pits, it's just too tight). But if you get there early, it's like any day at the field, except your on the flight line with all the "big names", names like Anna Wood, Bob Sadler, you know all the people who really make things happen.

As for lodging, there are lots of places to sty, but you will need transportation. It's about 12 miles (guessing) to the nearest hotel. If you've never been to Arizona, you'll be amazed. The field is out amoungst the huge Sagaro (spelling) Cactus which are very impressive to see up close. Teh Davis Monthan bone yard is about a half hour away and worth taking a trip to as well as the PIMA Air Museum, and as long as your on that side of town you can stop in to visit DA and get that tour, also very impressive. And there's the obvious, some of the best in the world doign there thing on Saturday and Sunday. So, have you got your plane tickets yet? If not, get on it! I'll see you there!

Kevin,

I would hardly classify myself as a "big name", just one of the behind the scenes people that make it all go (hopefully) smoothly for the competitors. The big stars are all the pilots, Sportsman thru Unlimited, and Invitational. The flying last year was outstanding.

As Kevin says, things are a bit more relaxed, on site, earlier in the week. But as the week progresses into the weekend the pilots start to get their game faces on. They are having fun, but this is serious competition amongst the best pilots in the world.

Tucson is a really neat city. A college town with the University of Arizona, an old west town with much history of the old southwest and also some fantastic airplanes at the Pima Air Museum. Here is a link to the Tucson Convention and Visitors Bureau, there you can find out about all the neat places the family may be interested in seeing.

For weather in Tucson, as it gets later in October the weather gets better, cool nights, comfortable days. The kind of weather that reminds all of us midwest folks why we moved to Arizona. Here is a pretty cool weather website. It is great for us aviation buffs.

Hope to see you all at this year's Shootout.

Anna,

I was really hoping you were going to say that if you were 6th in Unlimited, you get the Automatic invite back.

In all seriousness, this was by far, the best, most fun, well run contest that I have ever been to.
Definately worth the effort pilots make to attend and definately worth it for spectators.

Just want to clarify the batterys were stolen from a storage unit outside Marks apt. in Vegas while he was attending the Nats in Muncie. If you are only able to attend Tucson for a couple days then make it on Sat and Sun. Thats when the freestyle rounds are flown. Also if you are there earlier in the week you can usually get into the pits and most pilots are willing to talk with you and show you there planes.
