Hey Guys,
Just wanted to give a heads up on what I got through an email last night. I received 2 emails, one from what looked like my internet provider and the other from PayPal. Both seemed suspicious. They both turned out to be what I think were Phishing schemes. One told me that a new password had been authorized. Well I know that I didn't change anything. This was for the PayPal site. When I click on the suggested reply it took me to what looked like PayPay site and stated that the page had been moved, click here. I was not suspicious until I click on the next page and they were requesting Credit card info to enter the site. Including PIN numbers. Major Alams here now. Then it hit me to try to enter PayPal by typing in the web address myself, and it was imediately noticed that the site looked the same, but had pop up boxes about entering secure web pages. So please be aware. The internet provider email, stated a new email address had been added. There was an attachment, but I did not open it. DO NOT OPEN it. I called my provider, they checked. No address had been added. The messege was hoping to have you open the attachment which could have lead to who knows where. The provider stated to pass on this info. They NEVER send messages with attachments. NEVER. I was lucky and didn't get caught off guard this time. So, Beware guys. Just thought I would pass this along.

Thanks for that info Joe, I've gotten the PayPal e-mail a couple of times in the last few years. You are absolutely right, they are fishin' for info, according to PayPal.
Great heads up!!! To all, Just one more positive aspect about being in the Flying Giants family, with members like this keeping us informed!!! |

Thanks for the warning...I have not only gotten stuff like that for Paypal, but also ebay....they tell your your account needs to be updated or it will "expire" What a bunch of crap. The emails really look legit. but I ALWAYS delete them....I never had my account suspended or cancelled. I would suggest to all that they do the same, just delete them.

My bank contacted me the other day, said my card had been suspended due to unauthorized use. When I went in to the bank to check on it they said that someone had tried to use it in Mexico. My card is issued through my credit union & they will not authorize transactions outside of the U.S. unless I (or any other member) contact them prior to traveling. Since I haven't been to Mexico in years,,,, . Now last night I got a phone call from some credit rerporting outfit asking if I still lived at some oddball address I never heard of. I think I have a problem. I guess I have done my last ordering from the internet.

Heres a TIP for everyone.
PAYPAL will only send you an email that starts off with your ACTUAL name that you registered for your paypal account with. Hence all the "Dear paypal member" omails are completely BOGUS. Look at any paypal reciepts... any legit paypal email will ALWAYS start with: Dear: YOUR NAME, Hope that helps!

Sounds familiar.
I had a problem a few months back and by pure luck my darling wife was watching the CC account on the internet. She called me to ask if I had purchased anything worth $1500 from a shop in Texas. I had not but thankfully on the account the phone number of the Texas sports shop was shown. I called the guy and thank god he smelled a rat as well. Some dude in Amsterdam (Holland) had ordered $1500 worth of sling shots. I had it stopped so the shop was not out of pocket and nor was I. Then I found a purchase for some spy software to get info on people. That had been succesful so I called them and they refunded the money, and removed the access for this crook at the same time. Guys I buy 90% of my stuff on the net. I have no choice due to where I choose to live. I had never had problems so was baffled as to how this happened. On reflection I remembered sending my CC details in an Email to someone who did not have online purchasing. THAT IS A TRAP, NEVER DO IT LIKE THAT. All emails can intercepted if you have the skills. They are not secure unless you have some sort of encryption setup and 99% of people dont. If you need to send your CC information by email then do it in two mails or more. NEVER EVER put all your information on one single message. There are some super smart critters out there who make a living off identidy theft and CC info theft. If the web page has a small padlock icon on the lower part of the page or the address is a HTTPS** site then your secure. If it is an unsecured web site your open game but again nearlyy all sites that use use web commerce are OK. Its those danged Emails that will bring you unglued. Internet commerce is here to stay, it is secure. If you dont like it then most offer to let you phone in your details but again, that way you are putting all your info in the hands of a human being you dont know. Simple rules I follow is take a look at the CC account on the internet every few days to see if anything unkown happened. If it did, call it, the banks cancel it, you dont pay a dime and go get a new CC. Its a pain in the butt I know but thats life in a society that has people who want your money for nothing. Kiwi |

I just got caught
Looked at my account last night...... a charge to Godaddy.com a charge to yahoo wallet (unknown amount) Name being used is Lieu Liau. (and these companies don't use the last 3 on back side to verify, so all they needed was the card number Card is CNX and companies are refunding me the money. Now I'm having to call all my CC and get new numbers and check most recent purchases.

Being from the banking industry, I can tell you that it is the merchants responsibility to verify the identity of the card user, and that in the event that they cannot swipe the card through a machine (ie, being there in person) there is 98% chance that if the charges are charged-back, the store will lose the claim as they did not take the necessary means to identify the customer/cardholder. As for what i tell my customers, I say to that even if I call them, hang up on me and call me back. Also, if it ever appears that we send them an email, never follow any links, just type in the correct web address and go to the site that way. Lastly, I tell them that if I am calling them, I have their profile up in front of me, and that I can see all their account numbers and such, so I wouldnt need to verify anything.

Tons of the phishing scams and lots of other virus crap comes from Eastern Europe and other countries. Much of the scam pages and Emails have grammatical errors because these people don’t have a perfect mastery of the English Language. Maybe I don’t either cuz I suck at spelling but you can easily tell in the usage of words on phony emails and web pages. If a sentence doesn’t make sense then its a scam.

I make a lot of purchases via the internet.
I use only one of my cards to do this. Every 4 months I call the credit card co. and request a new number. So far, no problems, after many years of purchases. |
