I got one of these in the Russian Thunder scheme , planning to use a DA 50 w/can. Because of the weight I am now thinking it will need more than a 50 size engine for hover pullout ,etc. I have been considering a ZDZ 80 w/can since it is close to the same weight as an Evo 58.
Wingloading is another concern. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I have stopped working on this model until I can decide on the engine to use. THANKS, Rick Last edited by rcrick; 09-20-2006 at 06:08 PM. |

That DA 50 will work fine. The zdz 80 is way over kill. As long as you make sure you are all ways thinking about weight it will rocket out of a hover. That 80 will shake that airframe apart. Go with the DA.

The reason I am considering a larger engine is based on my Extreme Flight Yak .It has a DA50 w/can. It weighs about 16lbs.and pulls out of a hover pretty good. Th A.M. Yak is going to be about 3lbs. heavier and I just do not think the 50 will have enough .
THANKS, Rick |

DA50 is plenty. I found the best prop for the combo was either a 22x8 Menz or a 22x8 Prince P-Tip if you can find one. Mine had plenty of pullout at 18 pounds with my DA50, slimline wrap-around muffler combo.

Johns right DA50 is plenty. I tried a MSC 23X8, Menz 22X8 and a NX 22X8 and found the Menz and NX were the best. I really like the NX actually.
While not a good vid you can kind of get an idea of pullout with a DA..... http://www.flyinggiants.com/gallery/...o=8406&cat=504 |

I had one w/ a DA 50, plenty of power! I 3D'd the crap out of that plane. It does anything w/ a DA 50 on it.

Yah I bet the 80 would work just fine, it might be better with a 3 blade but as long as you use lots of tristock and put lots of mass on the engine box it should be fine.
I had a DA 50 on my Yak and it flew great. That one crashed so I am building another one right now with the DA it should have great virticle. I had stock exhaust on my DA and I think that is the best setup. It gives more power than the other mufflers, except maybe the tuned pipes and really great cannister setups but it is by far the lightest, and loudest! I like the loud though.... |

If you want to put a 80 in it, why didnt you just buy the 33%?

The 3W is also heavier. The 30% Aviation Models shouldnt end up at 19 pounds, those guys are claiming closer to 17, and even at 19 the wing loading should be fine. I have the Aeroworks 28% that ways just over 18 pounds dry, 85" wing, and does fine with a DA 50 (swinging a 3W 23 x 8). It has plenty of power, in fact im going to try a 24 x 8 to try to keep the rpms down on the top end. IMO, go with the DA50 and fly it like you stole it. Yaks fly light anyway.
