Default Which 50cc plane????

Hi,

I've started Imac this year with my Wh 1.20 edge 540, but its a bit underpowered and it won't 3d too well, so I'm going to sell some of my glow stuff and save up for a 50cc plane.
I don't know what the best options are??
I really like my Wild hare and I'd love to go for another - Any ideas???

Also, whats the best Petrol engine?? My friend has a Zenoah 62, it seems real promising and he's getting the Wh edge. What do you think?

Thanks

Any 50cc airframe that you get you can't go wrong. I am sold on the Aero-Works 50cc Yak QB and their 29% Katana. The WH planes are awesome along with all the Air Wild, Aero-Tech and Aviation Models airframes. In my opinion the G62 is a bit heavy for a 50cc airframe, I would go with a DA50 or the 3W55 both are outstanding engines and pull hard
Just my 2 cents.....

fiber-lite edge 540 , less than 16#s with a 50cc. Not an arf , but a kit.

It's hard to believe it, but the one my dad has weighs only 14.8lbs with no carbon parts except for the prop. It has a DA50 with a Mej. 32/8 and hovers at 1/2 throttle.
There is a story behind it though, it's the 3rd. one. The first one he used a Fuji 50 AKA the boat anchor, used hitec HS5645mg all around and it weighed a whopping 22.3lbs. It still flew good but we had servo problems and the elevator servos would cut out and not respond. After multiple times fixing the plane from the incidents dad got pissed and did an Irish Jig on the plane and broke the wings in half/crushed the fuse.
The second one he built used a DA50 but he used the same servos that was in the previous one. He checked the servos on the bench for a week and they acted fine. After the plane was built it came in at 15lbs. It flew great and we were having a ball with it. On the 3rd. flight he was performing a square loop and on the down leg one elevator went to full deflection without giving any elevator on the transmitter. He knew what it was right away when the right elevator was stuck in the up position when we walked towards it. He did the same thing as the first one except he took the engine out from the engine box with a Drywall hammer.
The third one is doing great since we switched to JR 8611a servos. When he built this one he tried to build it as light a possible and 14.8lbs was the final weight. It fly’s extremely well for IMAC and I think it is on par with the AW Yak QB for 3D.

I had an Aeroworks 29% Katana, and it weighed 20lbs dry. It had a DA 50 in it, and Hitec digitals. High wing loaded plane in my opinion.

I have flown the QB Yak several times with a DA 50 in it, and it is a -much- better flyer than the Katana.

Another view.

IMAC is not about 3D so a much cheaper solution would be to install a somewhat larger engine in the Edge you have. You will be starting in the lower levels where your plane is quite competetive. Flyers that practice a lot will place well flying a dog that's been passed around for years. Your Edge most certainly is not one of those. A little more power and I'll bet your Edge will 3D just fine.

In the meantime, save the money you would have spent in what I believe would have been a premature move so you can move to a 30% or larger plane after you've advanced a class or two in IMAC. That will also accomplish a couple of other things. #1 is you won't be pestering your dad for his DA right away, and #2 is it will provide your dad with a valid reason for him to get a new and larger plane as well, making both of you happy.

Bypass the 28% step, it's really not necessary if you've already developed the flight skills you will need with what you have through IMAC practice and competition. My best to you regardless of the choice you make.
