Default Final USRA Race of 2006 - World Championship

The first two races of the 2006 USRA World Championship Series were filled with exciting racing and even record speeds! Now the competitors head to the final race in Parker, AZ this month (Oct. 26-29) where the World Champions in each class will be determined. So the racing will be faster and closer than ever!

You've seen these awesome aircraft on this site and in the magazines but nothing can compare with the real live sound and fury that you get at the race! And there's no better venue than Parker, AZ, with the Blue Water Resort and Casino as the sponsor hotel. So come out and enjoy some fun in the sun and see what all the excitement is about!

The official event flyer with all the accomodation and event contacts is located here and further information about USRA racing can be found on the official site www.usrainfo.org.

The "air" in Parker always seems to be fast. Looking forward to racing some familiar faces and meeting some new folks.

If you're thinking you might be interested in checking out Giant Scale Racing (GSR), let us know and we'll make sure you get the dime tour...heck, we might even put you to work!

Max can give the real "lowdown" on this but he's sending out an official FG rep (I think he's his brother-in-law!) to cover the event in photo and video on Saturday. So there should certainly be some exciting coverage of the racing action in true FG style!

Kenny, do you have a new plane ready or are you wrenchin' for this one after you tried to "out crash" me at Ashtabula when YOUR tail was cut off!. Tell everyone what's up with your backup plane....an awesome gesture if I do say so myself!

Parker is going to be a FANTASIC horizonal Huck Fest!! 60 of the fastest prop driven R/C aircraft in the world will be in Arizona Oct. 28 - 30. And as if it couldn't get any better, we stay right across the street from the airport at the beautiful Blue Water Resort and Casino! Did somebody say " BlackJack"?

We know that the TAS is going on that same weekend but, we will be flying Friday and you guys going east to Tucson can stop by and catch the Giant Scale Racing action!

Robert.... You make me feel bad when you talk about out unintentional meeting in the air over Ashtabula. I wish that you and I could be battling it out for the championship!! Are you and your N.C. buddies going to be able to make the race? We would love to see ya!!

SPEEDDADDY! HA! Horizontal Huckfest! I Love it! Yes, FlyingGiants will be onsite at this killer event and will bring back all the action to the site for everyone to enjoy. You guys better treat my boy good, and keep him away from Holly!!! He bites!

BTW, I would like to welcome all of you to the new forums here on FlyingGiants that are dedicated to this incredible sector of the hobby. Horizontal Huckin' is a masterpiece of words in one regard-- the go fast has got to be the closest thing I've seen to the adreneline rush of aerobatics. Glad to have you guys here!!!

SpeedDad.....,

Unfortunately, the "Potential Flow Racing" boys will be staying in the East for this one and will miss all the fun at Parker. Ditto on the "racing for the championship" thing for sure!

Did you see the headline in USA Today? "In a secret shop in Raleigh, NC, scientists are assembling fast new race planes from new materials like Unobtainium that can resist blade strikes..." We're in business for next season! I think your hero coined the phrase, "Rubbin' is Racin'".

Everyone should realize that the mid-airs that we speak of don't really happen that often and Ashtabula had more than its' share for sure. But I just have to share a cool pic with you. Michael Moyers' Proud Bird (below) also got that run-down feeling after we seemingly passed too close at Rantoul. He was as surprised as me to see this after he landed since we really didn't realize there was any contact! And I only suffered a little some damage to my prop tips! Michael, did you pay Scott to return the favor?

Hey Robert...that's an awesome photo! I didn't realize you were so skilled with those props! Chicks dig guys with mad skills!

I couldn't put together an F-1 for Parker this year after the mid-air in Ohio, so I'll be missing out on that class...that's going to be tough! But.....my backup F-1 is going to be flown by Mike McConville. Mike raced the first two events with my backup plane, won the Ohio event, and is leading the Championship points so he's got the seat so we can keep the Championship in the Speed Demons camp!

I did have a slightly damaged Unlimited in the hangar that needed some repair, and I've been thrashing on that and hope to have it at the race. It's an Ashley with a 290cc Herbrandson on it. It swings a 25x27 prop, weighs about 41 pounds dry, and goes about 225mph. Racing it is a rush that just can't be described with words. As soon as it passes by you at the start finish line, you start to roll it up for the turn!

Taking off and landing it is like getting into a cage with a trained tiger. Most of the time you hold the chair and crack the whip and the tiger does what it's supposed to. Every once in a while however, it decides to walk over and take a bite out of your butt! Take off starts with about 1/3 throttle, full right rudder, and some up elevator. As you start the takeoff roll, you immediately start easing off the elevator untill the tail comes up and stabilizes in a slightly tail down attitude. You chase the rudder a bit until the speed comes up enough for it to track straight. When you get enough air speed, she'll lift off by herself, but....there is so much torque that it lifts off rolling to the left so you have to crank in full right aileron just as it breaks ground. As soon....and I mean as soon as you get daylight under the wheels you have to hit the gear switch and get the gear up before the force of the increased airspeed pins the gear in the down position. As you gain speed you have to slowly ease off of the right rudder and the right aileron. Then you can throttle up and enjoy the rest of the flight....throttle changes in the middle of the takeoff run can add even more fun to the takeoff so I try to avoid them! Landing is much simpler...you keep it a little hot because of the weight, and you get one shot at the flair....if you balloon, you're missing the next round or maybe dinner tonight 'cause you'll be fixing the landing gear. If everything goes right and you get it up and down in one piece, you will have approximately 20 minutes of adrenaline induced elation. Then the realization that you have to fly again will dawn on you and you will start worrying about making it through another race. It's a roller coaster of a different sort. The racing part is so good it makes up for hellish takeoff and landing bookends!

Come to the race and you will see!

Tim....this is about as far from 1/2A QTee racing as you can get! I hope we can get you a ride...if not, bring your lead weighted shoes and your ear protection and you can hold and launch the Ashley...It's not a pleasant job, but I think you might enjoy it.

Be careful Martin...I just might decide I need to dance on top of your motorhome again! Like I said, flying the Ashley is a dream...landing it is stressful....taking it off just about trips my circuit breakers. I'm already starting to get nervous about it....no exaggeration!

That's why they pay the Unlimited guys the big bucks!

Good Luck...and hang on to that thing in Parker.
