I was out there yesterday and there was some excellent flying going on. I was just disappointed with the freestyles. Mark Leesburg perfomed an AWESOME routine the first day. It was one of those WOW freestyles. All the others were just plain and not what I would think "Master" pilots would perfom at such a high level contest. Now granted there is no way I could fly like these guys but I was just expecting some more balls out flying like Mark did. I dont know, maybe others have different opinions about it or maybe it was just the first day and they are all holding out for today and tomorrows rounds since they will eliminate half the field tomorrow.

I bet its the "hold back till it counts" kind of thing...
Like playing chess... you don't want to drop the Big dogs until you HAVE to. Also, I'm sure a crash in the early stages would suck as well.. BUT.. props to Beavis for having some stones!!

2 airplanes will never fly the same, plus, you gotta leave a surprise factor for the next round of freestyles, if you go balls to the wall first round then its not near as exciting 2nd round, and might not look like any improvement.

I think with the Freestyles its about covering the criteria not wowing the crowd.

Jason,
As long as you are asking I'd like the vids to be Wildberry style- HD, lots of great angles, stereo, candid interviews, after hours hijinks, etc. Thanks. You're the man. Dave |

Wayne,
I'm sitting in Texas. You will never get the general public modelers to understand that freestyle is all about the precision also. There are no extra points for flying lower at ANY of the major contest. (XFC included) You only have four minutes to show the ENTIRE speed range and maneuver range of the airplane. That doesn't leave much room to have a lowest slow roll contest. Oh yeah it only counts 10% of your score. Perfect proof of that is Jason Shulman. He was in 4th with a zero in free. The free IS NOT AND NEVER WILL BE WHAT WINS!!! Known and unknown is what finds the best pilot. The freestyle is for the crowd. A huge portion of the free score is execution. Performing any maneuver that can't be done to perfection every time will hurt your score more than it helps. So Free is 10% of the result/ Has to be precise/ have to use your sequence airplane that you spent 100 flights on getting perfect/ Basically there is nothing to gain and everything to loose by performing daring maneuvers in the free. The very last free of the contest could be the only barn burner if someone only needs a few points to win. That would be an everything to gain and nothing to loose deal. Lets hope that is not Shulman. He is due to win. I've seen him sooooooo close but just never put the pieces in the right place. Wayne I know you understand this. I'm just trying to relay the message to everyone else. You go to the Masters to watch the best precision pilots from around the world. That is what there being judged on. PRECISION at all times. Jason Danhakl ps. Mark's definition of pushing and the rest of the world is a little different! |

Its 10% of the score. Chris Meier used his 10% to full effect also! He was fourth in free. That is a great acomplishment. He was at the bottom in the Unknown due to a wrong roll direction. Untill that drops he will be at the bottom of the overall also. Shulman was second and zeroed the free and droped to fourth. He is still at the top of the list with a zero in free because Jason flew the pattern rounds very well. You know the rounds that make up 90% of the total score. Not because he flew freestyle well. Mark is in second because he flew the pattern rounds very well. Not because he flew the balls out free. He flew a soild free round and people in front of him did not. I can argue tell the end of time, but it comes down to the pattern and how precise you fly the freestyle. Mark balls out is very precise I'm sure. That may effected the outcome? What do you think?
