I got a plane a month ago that had been crashed. It's a 40% 2000 Aerotech. It was weighing in at 41lbs with a DA150 before the misshap. I'm going to have to get a new set of wing cores and monocoat them anyway. So It got me thinking about how much weight it would save if it was all monocoated instead of painted? first question is how much trouble would it be to remove the paint? It peals off pretty easly on the area's that are damage. Second question would be would it be worth the trouble to save the weight? Thx shaun |

![]() The guy was coming in for a landing and split two trees. One caught the left wing and one caught the right. They were small trees that gave a little. But they needed to give a tad more .The fuse came away with minimal damage. |

just rebuild the damaged part and take off the old balsa skins and put on new ones. leave th foam cores and fix the damaged one. cut out the broken area and put in a new piece of foam and shape. then just resheet it with the balsa skins, cover it and fly!

I would just go ahead a biuld a new set of wings. to try to remove the sheeting and fill and shape would take twice as long as just resheeting a new set then monocote them to keep the weight down. Paint is just to heavy.

Shaun, your story sounds just like mine..... The Edge I just rebuilt hit a tree on landing and fragged a wing. Building a new set of wings really is not that time consuming. I had a good time doing mine!
As for paint VS Mono, the mono will be lighter (considering the thickness that most painters put down) however, stripping the old paint is a pain in the arse. On glass, you can sand it back, but on the wood, stripping it is not a good option...... with abrasives or chemicals.. As for strippin.... well, thats between me n my wife! : ) |

I would just trim the damage back so you have flat edges to work with. Glue a new bit of foam in the gap, sheet the new bit only, sand, fill and cover damaged area.
