Just bought an aviation models 35% yak. Need to know if a 100cc engine is enough to fly 3d or do I need to go bigger? Has anybody tried a BME 115 in their's yet? Any input will be helpful.

I have seen one fly with a 3w 106, and it was plenty, would pull out of a hover pretty good even at 28.5lbs before fuel. A 115 would be great too, if you could get it to balance.

Yep, any of the 100 class engines is plenty, DA100, 3W106, BME110/115. The 110/115 are very light, you may need to run a heavier spinner or add some weight up front to get it to balance correctly.

whats the flying weight you've been getting and on what kind of set-up? (lipolys, smoke, etc.)

The one I saw was setup with a 106 on cans, 2 2400 fromecos for rx, smart fly power expander, 2400 on ignition, mejzlik 28x10 and tru-turn spinner. No carbon wingtube, gear, etc. With a carbon gear (the one that AM sells, not graphtech), carbon tube, stock mufflers, I think 27lbs is achievable with a 106. You could also run the BME 115 and a set of cans, which would weigh what the 106 does with stock mufflers, and the cans would help the cg come forward with the BME 115.

The plane is setup for a 3w 106 and that seems to be a perfect match powerwise. It has more power than the DA and the weight it perfect to ballance the plane. The newer AM yak are coming out in the 28 lbs range. If you go with the carbon gear and li-ions you can get this plane down in the 27's. With 2,223 sq in of wing area you will have one of the lightest loaded planes out there in this size range.

Is that with the stock mufflers or cans? And the 28-30 lbs range is with nicads & no smoke?

Yeah I wouldn't put a DA-100 in it either. 106 on pipes!

mines got a da 100 with stock mufflers. its really good. im not a DA man, it was just that i had one laying about. it flies real light. its got sd model carbon gear and no smoke. 28.5 lbs. oh yeah, 3600 mah nimhs.

you will be pleased with this plane.

I bought a 3W 106 CS. After I mounted the engine I noticed that the engine is sticking out of the cowl a good bit ( 1-5/8") from the front of the cowl to the back of the spinner back plate. Anybody else with a 3w 106 like this?

That is exactly what you want right there. Mount the firewall all the way back against the bottom box plate and use 1/2" standoffs. This will actually increase your power and make the plane fly better having the prop away from the cowl.

hey garret. i mounted my da100 so the prop is out about 1/2 inch. should i use standoffs to make it like the picture above. how does it increase power?
