I had a ZDZ 50 on a GP patty wag.
Due to the size of the wagstaff (78") the plane flew a bit heavy but the ZDZ was a great motor. It ran great with a 22- 8 Mens prop and after a while a 23 - 8 was balistic. My motor was broke in when I got it so I just ran Pennzoil air cooled at 40:1. This motor tends to be a bit cranky on the first start of the day, your going to want to rock the prop back and forth with the choke on, and ignition off to get it wet. You will hear when the fuel in actually in the carb. Then turn ignition on, and flip untill the motor pops. Turn choke off and flip it a few times, and you should be running. (but know that the first start of the day may take 10 or so flips to get running. Make sure you have the motor adjusted to run a bit fat and you should be sweet. Have fun!

hmm, keep igintion away from rec equip, use only tygon, make sure your tank and pump are gas acceptable (gas can ruin a diaphram), only use composite or plastice clevis on choke or throttle, soft mount the ign unit, run an "in-line" filter (dubro is good), at our field you have to have a spinner, make sure your thrust angles are correct!

you can break it in on Pennsoil at 32:1 as well. I broke my ZDZ80 in on it and actually never switched. Still 32:1 and it runs great. Very nice motor.

I ran all my early ZDZ's on Pennz - no problem except for scratches (cosmetic) on the pistons
Now I run the synthetics from day one at 32-1 the engines run great and - no scratches - maybe the pistons are now harder maybe the rings , Don't know but the rings turn a nice dull even color. and compression is excellent My 160 reminds me of the old OS ABC 60's I used - almost squeaky tight at top of stroke then loose easy feel around again to top. Love that feel--- |
