Default BME 115

Finally ran my 115 (stock mufflers) today, and after getting the needles set pretty close, the engine idles great, transitions great, and makes very good power on the top end. The engine is also very smooth with minimal vibration, as good or better than the DA and 3Ws I have had. It was about 75 degrees here today, 600' elevation and was getting 6300-6350 on a mejzlik 25x12 3 blade, with reasonable temps on the motor running pennzoil 32:1, and it appears to be easier to keep cool compared to the 110. The carb seems easier to tune than the 110 (not that the 110 was very hard to tune), and transitions better than the 110 IMO. The engine is on a 22-23lb WH 260 and even with the 3 blade it is ballistic. I got about 5 flights on it, so still too early to tell how its going to compare to the 3W 106s I have been running. So far very pleased and will report back in a few more gallons.

I bet that is a ballistic friggen missle! Do you remember how wide the motor is between the plug caps?

I do not know the width for sure, the caps do not stick out of the cowling, and the plugs on a DA do stick out on the same plane, so it has to be a bit more narrow.

Sweet, I'm growing tired of the single I have. Plus one of these would open up more plane options.

Its a great running engine, a friend was down with his super 80 powered yak with a pitts muffler, NX 26x10, and the 115 running a mejzlik 25x12 3 blade just blew away the super 80 in the power dept (as it should), both airplanes about the same weigth 23lbs or a bit less. The 115 is very tight, going to take quite a bit of time to break it in.

Good to hear you got it in the air FRB .. and that you are having such fun with it.

I'm still slowly leaning the mixture on my 115/KS-1060 setup. It's a bit on the rich side and the bottom of the plane is black with it, but the power is STUPID with a Mejzlik 28-10 on the front. On the 31 lbs MX-2 it's ballistic. . .even running rich. I bet its just silly on your Wild Hare.

I'll have some ground tach numbers for mine this week during the SE Regionals. Looks like Keith has yet another winner in the 115.

Kris, I set my needles at 2.5H and 1.5L, I ended up having to go in about 1 full turn on the high to get it to run right, now my temps are in the 220 range and running rich on top. On the bottom I had to go in to about .9 turn out and it is doing pretty well there, but still burbles a bit in knife edge, so I am going to try leaning it a bit and see if that fixes it or put on one of the 3w 90 degree intakes. I think its probably an airflow problem as about half of the carb is sticking out of the cowling, but I do have the carb cover on it with a line back into the fuse. Happy with the motor so far.

Is that what the 3W carb intake is for?

Yes, I am going to try the intake, as the carb sticks out of the bottom of the cowling about .75". It runs great on the ground, doesnt burble in the air, but roll it up in knife edge and it burbles. I do not want to go any leaner on the bottom end, so the 90 degree intake should cure this problem. Its not a BME 115 related issue with the carb, its an airframe issue.

Yeah, if I go with this engine for the Dalton, I might have to buy one as well.

50% more stupid or silly than a ZDZ80 on a pipe!!!

FRB, I'm right at about 1.75 turns out on the hi and 1.5 on the low. Any roll overs or point rolls results in burbling till the engine clears, so it's definitely fat. With the 1060's I'm working it slowly leaner, since it's hard to tell when you are too lean, unless the engine sags on an upline. I shoudlhave it pretty much dialed in by the time we take off for the first round of the Regionals on Friday. I'l have tuesday afternoon and all day Thursday to play with it.
