I did a little research on this a few months ago, in the model field it is split about 50/50, seems to depend on what the individual owns or has flown. I have had both the 260 and the 300 and have found there to be less coupling in the 260's that I owned (1 Hanger 9 27% and one Miles Reed Kit). From what I read the wing positioning on the 260 is closer to the thrust line and puts it more in-line with the horizonal tail and that is why there is less coupling. I'm not sure about that since you have factor in the drag of the canopy, turtle deck and landing gear to get an accurate understanding of the coupling.
I also found out the Patty Wagstaff flew her 260 for 6 years (if I remember correctly) and when she went to replace it they no longer made it since the 300 had come out and that she was disappointed. The article I read stated that she still preferrs the 260 over a 300. Just my 2 cents worth.

The difference on my 300 over the 260 is a different wing location, rudder, turtledeck, cowl, canopy, and landing gear. It uses the same wing airfoil as the 260 does and works very well so why change it. The 300 does have alittle more side area and requires alittle less pitch and roll coupling than the 260. They are both excellent for precision and freestyle and basiclly comes down to which one you like the looks of the best. I know that Mark would agree that one does not fly much better than the other.
Tony ( hanging with Wilson in Tucson for the night ) I will be back in the shop on Monday. |

I ordered a 35% 260 kit recently and I would've gotten the 39% 300 instead, but I'm not sure of my trailer situation for the next few years so I got something I could put in the bed of my truck if need be.

Im sorry folks - but I just cant see it - The only way I would cough up 2500 bucks for a Dalton is the time factor. With these two things (moeny and time) taken into consideration - Compared to the AW 260 - (the Dalton is definitely a good plane which is a very good plat form to go with). For the average builder/flyer - time and money are critical - IMHO - I would definitely go with the AW's 42% 260. 1900 bucks - covered - carbon wing/stab and tail wheel assy installed. Extremely good hardware package - not the kind you throw away when you get it. fit and finish are great. I have seen this first hand. Now for those who access and good wood working tools - then I say go for it. I Could consider doing such a thing several years ago - Kids/wife and job - - man I gotta fly. FWIW gotta AM 37.5% YAk on the building table hope to get in the air for next year's season. I would defnitely go for this over the fiberglass alternatives.
2400 bucks - Dalton or Cardon not covered not painted - 1900 bucks - coverer painted - very good hardware package. Not trying to bad mouth the Dalton or Cardon - I wouldn't have even considered the AW's kit till I actually saw the quality and great flight characteristics of the 30% 260 first hand. AW's has a really great product right now. Which is tailored for a guy in my position. IMHO!! Ronster Last edited by rdgood; 10-30-2006 at 07:36 PM. |

The Aeroworks is an option for some people who want an arf 260. I already have the Dalton 260 and it flies great. I ordered the Dalton 300 kit based on the fact that it is very similar to the 260 with a few tweaks to it that should benefit an already great flying airframe. Also, I'm not in a hurry to get a plane in the air so why not build my own this winter and finish it to my standards.

Pea, to each their own, maybe a good portion of my fun is getting new stuff. Maybe I will start raggin on you for being short or crashing planes lol.

Some people are fliers and some people are builders. For me, it helps to spread the cost out and I have a unique plane at the field. Can't get that buying an Aeroworks plane, though I would like to have one of their 260's.

I've flown Dalton 260s for 2 seasons of IMAC competition and got the chance to fly Leseberg's 300 from the masters for the shootout this year. For me the strength of the 260 was always snaps. The wing planform and airfoil make for very clean, predictable entries and exits. If the 260 has a weekness its in yaw damping/authority. This is only really noticable in unlimited level maneuvers (1 and 2 roll rolling circles, and long lines with multiple rolling elements), where if you're not careful with the rudder you can get mild tail wag. Once you get used to the airplane this isn't really an issue.
While I never really got that locked in feeling during a week of flying the 300 (due to low number of flights) I think the 300 keeps the same awesome snapping characteristics of the 260, with improved rudder authority and damping. Mark showed this beautifully flying the very roll heavy invitational sequences. Both airplanes are probably among the best sequence planes out there, but if I had to choose I a new one I would go with the 300. |

Like I said, I bought the 35% Extra 260 kit, but if I get a large tax return this year, I'll probably get the Extra 300 kit as well. Might sit in a box for a year or two before I start on it, but it'll be there. But then again, Tony might come out with something even better. Since he only has the 260 and the 300 now, I'd say go for the 300. Leseberg flew it over his 260 or his old Godfrey Extra for some reason, right?

I choose the 300, only reason is that it is a new design and would like to try new stuff always, for my type of flying either one would work, I should have mine ready for the next flying season starting with the Nall.
