We were all winners in Tucson!, The flying was off the scale and there was little holding back. Extra Points IMO for Kyle's on the deck smoothness & how about QQ's under the tree Flying!. Sunday he told me he was flying the shadow of the plane on the ground and with Sundays overcast, He wouldn't be able to attempt it.

The pilots have three Free Style chances, they can throw any one sequence out. If they touch they use that zero as the throw away and the other two are used for score. QQ did not touch, we had a good view point right next to the judges on the left side.

That is still not right, I guess they say no touching for safety am I correct,, I think Freestyle should have the cryteria taken away and let the judges judge the freestyle according to the "WOW FACTOR",, if someone touches then ole well,, if someone crashes ole well, put on a show for the FANS<<<<< not flying a IMAC sequence to music,,, just my two cents just like kyle touching in the rolling harrier>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The freestyle is definitely for the crowd. The pilots in most cases are flying their number 1 bird. Though they push the envelope, safety and keeping their plane intact has to be at the top of the list. Believe it or not, many of the top pilots don't really like freestyle. They have to do it for points, but after spending that much time setting a bird up, it's a BIG risk.

The criteria work well. It's not all about wow factor (but it does come into play.) If a pilot touches hard and damages their airframe, how can you know you didn't strip out servos or or if the structure can take it? You can also wow hard enough to break an airplane in the air. The touch rule has to be there.

At the Don Lowe, you need to fly the plane you're using in the sequences for freestyle as sequences and freestyle are part of the same contest. At the Tucson Shootout, it's separate contests. As there is prestige and $ on the line, most pilots fly their number 1 bird. Sure you can push harder with a 100cc ARF, but is that as impressive as a 40%?

I guess the issue is how hard is hard enough when it comes to the wow factor? How can altitude be measured fairly? At what point do you draw the line with safety? Sure we all want to see airplanes 1 inch off the ground, but why risk a zero to get it?

For me, it would be tough to judge. Guys flying to the music and using all elements of flight in an original manner with streamers, smoke, banners and other gadgets or somebody doing rollers 1/2 inch off the ground. Who did better?

The judges criteria is very well written. I think having criteria that places an emphasis on wow and altitude only, will make the freestyle a crash fest. Big gassers going in (and it does happen to the best pilots in the world) mean possible safety issues.

With all the litigation these days, one accident at one of the biggest meets in the world wouldn't do freestyle any good. I like to see guys push it as well as the next guy. But there does need to be criteria that calls for an emphasis on flying more than just stirring dirt clouds.

Kyle, QuiQue and all of the pilots put on one hell of a show for a very appreciative crowd. It was also done safely. I say job well done. Read the criteria closely. The judges aren't looking for 3 million pieces of broken airplanes at the end of the day, nor anyone getting hurt. Pilots who really pushed hard got scored REALLY well. Pilots who flew a bit more conservatively and to the letter of the criteria, scored REALLY well.

I say thanks to all the pilots who flew in the freestyle, to John Sharpless who's airplane went to fund the freestyle, to all the judges who were on the line, all the crowd who went bonkers and to those who made the rules and criteria for freestlye. We all have our favorites, but is chocolate or strawberry ice cream better?

GREAT FREESTLYE SHOW BOYS!!!!

I couldn't agree more with that qoute!! I beleive "freestyle" should be exactly that!! Anything goes....if you touch.....WHO CARES as long as it is not indangering other people. another words...it's "freestyle" with rules......then why is it called freestyle? in freestyle MX ( as in xgames) anything goes...you do it at your own risk! i think the rules in the "freestyle' should be looked at and changed accordingly to what THE PUBLIC wants to see. quit thinking "old stlye" and let the NEW GENERATION step in!!

But more importantly. Chocolate ice cream is far superior to strawberry. But you can't discount the new generations of flavors. Especially the Oreo cookies and cream. If you don't believe me, you should jump into the new century and try it out son!

Everyone keeps harping on how competitive these guys are and how they want to win etc, etc,,, then there is a comment on how they need to SAVE there airplane,, come on, these are the best pilots in the world,, did it look like Kyle(just using him for example)said I don't want to risk my plane I need to save it for the next sequence round,,,,,,,,,,,,,,no he said I want to win and put on a show for the crowd and by god he did,,, along with Leseburg trying to pull off that Suicidal Split S Rolling Dive,, he put it in but he went for it all, ,that gains my respect and the fans,, I realize some people try to explain this topic in good words but come on guys impress the fans,, if it keeps on like it is going they will have to call it The Personal Sequence Round , instead of Freestyle Round, ,,, I used to know a pilot that is about my age and used to TURN IT OUT, and he was one of the best but he has since fallen to the musical sequence round syndrom, I watched some videos of him at the XFC and they were rather boring,, do you guys see my point,,,

I'm with Biff on this one. I appreciate how low these guys get, but not as much as I appreciate some of the new and inventive maneuvers or combinations of old manuevers they come up with. It would impress me just the same. I could see being able to touch the tailwheel or main gear, but the flyability and condition of a plane after touching a flying surface is an unknown until you land it and check it out. Leave touching the ground to foamies or at remote flying sites out of the way of bystanders...

You know, it was a really great show and a great constest. The pilots won some prizes, the crowd got to see some great flying, the best in the world in fact. Thanks also goes to all of those behind the scenes as well, like sponsors, judges, volunteers and the spectators. It wouldn't be a grand show without the crowds of people. It's an awesome thing, a contest like the Shootout and the others like it around the country. So much has to take place long before the mention of a contest before it actually takes place. We have to make it worth the pilots time and effort to get there and keep it safe enough so that it can go on year after year.

My hat goes off to all that made it possible!
