The wing ripped off of the wing tube. The wing was bolted on. And yes Bill Hempel went up to him after and told him how to land with one wing.

I will second that!!!!!! Jeff and Matt are always a first class act.

Too bad about the airplane, The CA wings don't have a tube stop in them and the directions don't mention it. I didn't think about it on mine when I was building it but realized the problem before I flew it. The wing tube can shift to one side and then it has no support on the other side at the end. The result can be a lost wing. My fix was to put a couple of hose clamps on the phenolic in the fuse and clamp the tube in place. if you have a CA make darned sure you center the wing tube and make sure it stays in place.

My CA has a hose clamp on it as well.

One thing that amazes me with this type of wing tube on a foam wing. We learned years ago, back when gliders first used bagged wings, to lay in a triangle of CF tow/mat from the root with the tip/apex extending past the end of the wing tube. Adds virtually no weight, but immense strength. Something to think about for you guys that do foam wings. Sandwich it between the wood and foam and you will have to work VERY hard to fail the wing.

Before doing this the type of failure Jeff had was commonplace for gliders on launch.

airwild 35% 260.

Jeff did do a good job crashing to minimize damage though.

Shawn, just to be clear I think the plane was a Airwild Extra and not a CA Extra.
