On my new WH 260, I installed a carbon fiber tailwheel. First flight I flew for a couple minutes and landed (greased it in). I grabbed the tail and pulled the airplane back to the pit area and set the tail down normally. The tailwheel snapped like a twig. A buddy saw it to and can confirm I didnt hit it hard. Anyhow, I email the manufacturer and tell him and he says he will sell me another one for a bit of a discounted price. Am I wrong thinking that it should be replaced?

Here are a couple pics, sorry they are not better quality but carbon fiber isnt the easiest thing to take quality pics of. It snapped in two right after the bend, and it delaminated at the bend.

That HAS to be a defective one.
I have that same tail wheel on my Panzl and it has taken 40 landings including a less than perfect deadstick... and its still in perfect condition.

Get yourself an RC Blimp one, if you break that thing, I would hate to see what the rest of the plane looks like.

Well, with what Sleepy mentioned, I have had another one just like it and it was tough as nails and you would have to destroy the plane to break it as well, but not this particular one.

Now will they? Sadly, if your not one of the top flyers, and just another joe blow like most of us. With out a video showing what happened probably not .One thing is for sure it would be the last place I would get my material from again. If you get a chance pm me and let me know where you got it from. I don't want to make the same mistake. Thx Shaun |

Damn!!! Hate when that happens!!! I'll be looking to order 2 RC Blimp tail wheel assy's here soon!!! No carbon for me!! I think that with the easiest of landings, they DELAM!! I had a 3W tail whel assy on my 32%, and it took some harrier landings, but not all of them!! It eventually broke, and I think I put another one like it on it, and I think that it is still on it today!!
Manuf. should REPLACE it, for sure!!!

If the manufact. doesn't replace it, then I would buy one from another company and tell the manufacturer that you will no longer buy from them. I really get tired of the manufacuters putting the burden of paying for defective products on their customers. I always thought in any bussiness, the customer was first?! In todays world, customer satisfaction is a thing of the past. I can't even go through a drive thru without them messing up the order. Its a shame.

I would give them a call. Talking to them in person may give them a different feeling about the defective product you have. I have been on the manufacturers side of things and can say there was not a day that went by without someone wanting a new plane, to be sponsored to get anything for free. Some of these reqests were valid and some where not. Most of the time we asked the people E-mailing us to call and explain the situation. Only about 10% would bother to call and explain the problem. Those that did usually got the replacement parts they needed. Try calling you may get an entirely different response. Be nice and don't demand anything just explain your situation.

Whtever tyhe outcome, (I hope they see it your way), you can fix it for a spare.
Use really tough thread, kevlar braided, and wrap and CA layer it up and down the break, hitting it with kicker every wrap. A few layers.....yeah, it will be ugly thick, and it will hold up. I did this fix, just to fly once , as a field repair, and it has lasted dozens of flights so far. |
