I am expecting my 50% Bill Hemple Edge in December but still have not decided on the power plant, plane will be 60+ Lbs, what do you guys recommend for a reliable motor, I say reliable because the plane may be hanging on the prop more often than flying, thanks for your help.
STFU.

ZDZ 420 Quad would sound great and be plenty of power! About 1.8lbs heavier than the 3W 342.

This is a tough one, Bill has the prototype powered by a 3W 240, it was flown at the TAC in the freestyle by Jason Shulman, I looked at the 275 as an option but I recall a US company that made motors for drones but don't remember the name, a 300 twin would be nice.
Salami Man, thanks for your input but your salami motor is too small. Cap232 thanks the 342 is an option. dmichael, thanks for your input but I am trying to stay with twins, to keep it as simple as possible, baffling, adjusting two carbs etc..., no doubt the ZDZ puts out some serious power.

Elie, you could go with a Herbrandson, but it is more of a racing motor. Probably wont have the mid range that you are looking for.

Theres always the evo 300. Magnesium version is 14 lbs 32+ hp with the competition sleeves. Thats at www.forgues-research.com
Theres the black flame but more of a racing engine. If your looking for power it can run on alcohol it makes 40 HP on gasoline 36HP wich is still 4 hp more than any other engine in its class at 13.5 lbs. Capable of swinging a 40" 22p prop. That can be found at www.starr-racing.com The 275 from 3w I imagine would be enough power but only cranking out 23 HP probobly not enough for everyone. The 342 and the 420 could fly it but too heavy 18 and 19 lbs, and they are big motor. If you go 3w I would go to bobby at cactus aviation. www.cactusaviation.com good luck. If bobby dosnt have them e-mail me I have a 275 and a 342 brad new with full cans. E-mail me threw www.nodrok.com Good luck Tim Kordon |

Elie, at over 39 HP this ought to hover it regardeless of weight. Not much more expensive than the 3W and guaranteed to be more reliable than the Evo 300 http://www.ultralightnews.com/rotaxinfo/rotax447.html Plus, the pull start handle will look cool sticking out of the side of your Edge!

Tank, thanks for suggesting the Herbrandson, as you say it is a racing motor.
Nodrok man, thanks for the info but the Evo line have been out for a while, however I am yet to see one fly, anyway I am looking for a twin, as for the starr racing motor, that's bad ass but again that is a racing motor, the 275 maybe!! Craig, perfect choice, this way in case I get an ultralight,I will not have to worry about the motor. I found this manufacturer that I was looking for, what do you guys think, anybody has any experience with these engines. http://www.lightningaircraft.com/302D2.htm The 302, twin with 26 to 28 horses make sense to me but again, how will it perform? Anyone with experience or knowledge of this motor please jump in. Thanks for everyone that replied.

The VW offer by Craven and the 3 cyl Metro motor by mikeyj are by far the closest to what I am looking for, thank you guys for your help, it is going to be tough to choose in between the two, thanks again.
