Hello,
I was just reading about the 58cc Evolution 58GX. Horizon states 8.5HP, but this seems unreasonable when compared to other major brands out there. I would have thought around 6.5HP for an engine this size. Am I wrong? Also, how heavy a plane could you 3D decently with using this motor and a 24X10 (6,900rpm reported) http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...odID=EVOE58GX2 I am looking for comments from owners of this motor. Thanks,

I would buy a 3W, DA, BME, or Brison before I'd buy an Evolution 58. I had one and I had to send it in to Horizon (who has terrible customer service) after both weekends that I took my airplane out to fly. I hear good things about the smaller Evolution engines, but the 58 is a turd.

I had equally bad experience with my 58GX. It's been to Horizon twice and still doesn't work right.
When it works it makes crazy power - turns a 23x10 PT at 6,700 on an in-cowl muffler and it's not close to broken in yet. But - it is hard to start and cuts out whenever I do a left snap, spin or other high-g left torquing manuvers (no, it's NOT the fuel system.) I have had 2 carbs replaced and the reeds - that got it working to the point where the needles actually work - but I can't fly it hard without fear of it cutting out. Horizon service is friendly and sympathetic but they take FOREVER. Both times it was over 1 month before they sent it back... And now I have to send it a 3rd time. The MVVS version is supposed to be the same but I think not. Most people love the MVVS. I have the latest version MVVS 26cc and that is bullet proof. The new Evolution 58GX with the new ignition is supposed to be better... I wish I could give mine back, it sucks. |

Look at the MVVS version with the magnesium case - that one I have heard great things about. Those numbers you saw are possible on a canister - not on an in-cowl muffler. Or look at a ZDZ 60... You can get MVVS service in Canada too which is a plus.
I have seen a few posts from people who have had good Evolution 58's too... not as many as th ebad posts though. I have DA, ZDZ, FPE and MVVS engines and have had 0 problems with any of them (well no warrantee ones anyway HA HA.) The service from DA, Rc Showcase and Kurt at FPE is awesome - they all do turn-around inside 48 hrs 90% of the time. |

My first 58 ate the piston after 5 gallons or so, sent in for repair. When I got it back the engione ran for less than one minute, ate the piston and seized. That engine was replaced with a new 58gx2, that I, and several of my friends could never get started . That engine was replaced as well, after 2 visits to horizon service. I no longer own a 58 nor will I ever again in the future.

well i have a 58 and it is the most powerfull engine around the 50cc engines - brake in was long like the 3w engines but once broken in it is a marvel - i think you guys are to hastie and impatient with these engines - we have many flying and not one has had a problem - for the record i have all the other brands DA/ZDZ/3w in 50 cc and only the da had to go back for crank problems(factory re call) - all engines work well if you care to understand them and you treat them as per spec - 90% of all engine problems begin with us!!!! and we all know this.

Motors move because of an armature and Engines move due to internal combustion. ( I was similarly corrected some time ago) |

This hose gets hard and starts to leak. It causes all sorts of misery and can be replaced in about 5 seconds once you know what the cause is. I went through all the same things and finally found this leakinghose and all my problems with that engine went away. TF |

Also - not to disturb the thread too much and cause flames... but I KNEW someone would say "you guys don't know how to tune and you rushed the break-in." I am the first to admit just about everyone could learn something about tuning and breaking in engines - myself certainly included...
but the Horizon engine techs did find problems and replace parts which made my engine a little better each time. I just wish it took less than 1 month for them to get a carb in (for example.) It's hard to tune a carb when moving the needles doesn't actually do anything. |

My biggest complaint with the Evolution was the customer service. I would call them and the only person I could talk to was a customer service rep who just repeated what the mechanic would say. I don't hear anything bad about the MVVS version and people who run the 58 on a canister seem to be pretty happy, but I had a pitts muffler on mine. I just think there are better engines out there than the Evolution 58 and you'd probably be happier going with one of those. Just my $0.02 though.
