Default ZDZ 60

I am looking for an engine to mount on an AM 30% Yak. Currently has a BME 50 on the nose and weighs right at 18 pounds.

While I hear many good things about DA, I am not sure that one of their 50's would provide sufficient vertical performance for IMAC, so I am looking at the ZDZ 60. It would ultimately add around a half pound to the plane, but should provide more than adequate power. Yes? How about customer service, reliability, longevity and such?

Any experiences and observations will be appreciated!

For the additional weight, I dont think it would be worth it. I had an AM Yak with a DA50 18 pounds, and it had plenty of power for IMAC up through Intermediate. I never tried the advanced sequence with it, but I am sure it would have been fine.

Personally, I prefer to find ways to lighten up the plane and stay with the smaller (lighter) engine for better overally flying characteristics (not just when the nose is pointing up).

Having said that, if you were going to to get a ZDZ60, you might just as well go for the old style 80. It's only .2 lbs heavier and much stronger + it gives you flexibility for other projects down the road.

I agree Dave. If your gonna add the weight, you might as well invest in functional weight.

The ZDZ 60 is a great engine...Will swing a 24\10 in the mid 6s...A 24\8 should be near 7000... This is on a regular Bisson W\A pitts style muffler.

I owned one and wish I'd never sold it ....The 50s will NOT turn with it

If you think you're going larger someday and the current airframe can handle the extra power,by all means buy the older version 80

ZDZ rated the power of th new 50 ng same as the 60-
having had several 60's /50's inc both versions -- the bottom line is UNLESS you pipe the fifty - the 60 will pull more prop ,faster- always
also the stroke of the 60 and 80 are the same so if you up the piston pressure on the 60 ( a tuned can )- you can run with an 80 . The other fifties on the market are not as strong (or if you prefer ,any stronger)as the ZDZ50 NG - especially on a pipe . the 50 will crank 22x8 Mejzlic at 7750 easily dun it on two engines so far. on a small can I used on my Dalotels, the 60 turned MenzS 24x10 at 6400 all the time -

a note on customer service, rcs customer service is second only to da. in fact it may be as good if not better than da. quick turn-around, mike is very knowledgable, and will never have a problem getting through!
