Ok, I am sure this has been asked before but the market always changes.
I am looking for a winter project in the 100CC class for an IMAC / 3D plane. I want to build a kit, not an ARF. I like Extra airframes. I am not really into Yaks (no offense to those that love them). I would like to know what those of you that build would buy.... and here is the kicker......Why? I am very interested in the flying capability also, so if you had one built for you, feel free to chime in also on the flying side. I do not want to build a pig or a kit that needs tons of "mods" to be top shelf, unless they are easy to find information on. Without bashing another product, please tell me why you would pick your suggestion. This will be my first over 30% plane. Not my first build. I feel that in the past I have always built straight, light, sound airframes that flew well off of the table. Mechanically very sound is easy, the kicker is taking the time to give it a premium finishing job. By that point in a build, the draw of the smell of exhaust an blue sky tends to put a rush on. Having other planes to fly at this time reduces that monkey, I hope. Ok. Have at it! What am I building? |

Carden is my choice!!! Did some mods to my 2nd one, and got it to 27#!! EASY!!! Had it built for me.
Also, don't forget about Dalton and Aero-Tech. Dalton is all wood fuse and foam core wings, and stabs. Aero-Tech has a wood/foam fuse and foam cores for everything else. (B)ARF's are great if you only want to fly, welcome to the builders world!!! If I had the time/space(soon) I would build a new bird! Right now, this one will have to last me for a spell!!!!

Build a 35% Carden Extra 260. Very neautral plane, and looks great.

I'll add to the list of "Carden Preferred" builders here. You just can't beat the quality of a Carden kit.
They're very straightforward to build. The finish on all the pre-cut parts is awesome, and the edge-trued balsa sheeting is unbelievable! The Dalton kits look good as well from what I've read...but I haven't seen one up close. They definitely seem to be a lighter airframe without making a bunch of mods. The Aero-Tech's fly nice...but at least the one I built just didn't hold a candle to the quality of a Carden kit. I'll spend my hobby dollars on something i KNOW is right. |

You're right Sleepy, that was totally inappropriate of me....I know how partial you are to your male hookers....I mean, you even had to bring Poppel and Swanger with you to the Indoor Fest to keep you "company"!!
Tell you what, since I'm such a nice guy, I'll waive that part of my fee completely!

Thanks to everyone for the feedback and suggestions so far. I am looking into the Dalton 260 and the Carden the most so far. There have been some other suggestions I am looking into also. If there are any others you think merit a look, let me know.
So many choices, so little building space Thanks again! |
